MY HP pavilion d4996t, Vista SP2, HDD Seagate ST3750640AS. 'Smart' tells me failure Eminent. Computer Mgmt says drive is Healthy but crashed and did a dump, Seatools Using Fix all Long Came back Passed! I realize computer is 10 or more years old, and things do go bad.
Looking forward to the hours needed to reinstall Dozens of programs and reinstalling backups and with Vista support ending in the not too distant future. My question is, If I buy a new HDD and Win 10 Pro (64) and install it myself, or would it be better to take the HDD to a local tech and have them install windows 10 Pro (64) on the HDD and then I install the drive myself (If they will even do this). Reason I'm asking, I've done a number of clean installs over the years and every one was challenging if you know what I Mean, I guess I'm just getting lazy. If anyone has the time to answer my rambling thread, I really would appreciate it greatly.

Hi AirHead, I would get all the data I wanted off that failing drive ASAP. You said your comp is 10 years old, It may not have suitable hardware/motherboard for W10. It may be time to consider a new comp. You will be able to install your saved data from Vista onto a new comp.
If you check your comp with the MS W10 requirements and you're happy with a 10 year old machine, you will need to decide whether to go with a spinning HDD or a SSD. Good luck with your choices. Neil.

Thank You "retiredlearner" for the reply.
I just ordered a 750 spinner, found a good price and you know how it is. I have a 17" HP Envy Laptop and a Surface Pro 3, just got a Samsung 34" Curved Monitor (Awesome) I don't think I really need to get a new desktop. I've looked around to see if my d4996t would support W10, so far nothing to indicate otherwise. I'll be 88 tomorrow so that is part of my reason to update what I have. Have to run now will check in again tomorrow. Again Thank You!
