When attempting to relabel my hard drives, the computer created another nonexistance drive it called Simulation CD Drive "G ". I have tried all instructions from help, and from microsoft web site, but am unable to remove this CD Drive. Why won't it remove, or how can I remove it? Thanks.

    Hi grebsnig
Have you found a solution yet? Closest I've come in finding anything similar had to do with Nero?

    Hi again grebsnig
Thank you so much for the note. If it's ok, I'll post it here, so that others that may be able to help, can see it and hop on? As I've said, I've seen posts of people tht had pahntom drives, but no concrete reason for them, or solution, other than fdisking and repartitioning. Hopefully someone else will have a better plan.

What if you were to boot to "SAFE MODE" go to Device manager and remove all instances of CDROM and CDRW and reboot. Then manually add the drives back in?

This one is bugging me!
Have you used Fdisk to take a look and see what properties this other drive has?

    Safe Mode

 It isn't worth it!! If I boot in safe mode it destroys the entire arrangement of all icons on my desk top. About 60. It's a pain to have to regroup, and arrange them. But, I did already try that, and it didn't work. Shows your thinking though!

I've heard of people that used TweakUi to get rid of phantom drives. Just uncheck the drive letter listed therein. It found in TwqeakUi under "My Computer" > "Drives "

I realize that you may not have TweakUi and perhaps want to do it the pure old fashioned fundemental way. I respect that but just though you might want to know of this work-around that was available.

I expect it's a Registry entry that needs deleting. You might want to try a Reg search for the particular drive letter (e.g. X:\) and see what hits you get.

    :)

BTW, If that Desktop Icon scrambling is a problem for you, you can get this free Layout program. It will save the layout any time you elect to do so and will restore it to the saved configuration whenever needed.

    I wouldn't be without it!

    CD simulated drive

Zephr, I used tweakui. It left my simulation CD, and removed one of my valid CD drives and also changed the letter assignments I had on those drives. Now I'm having trouble assigning the letters I had. And, Microsoft wonders why people switch to another operating system! Thanks for your suggestion. I did download, and install the icon restore. Thanks.
