I've seen this question in many forums but it has never been answered to my knowledge:

I was using Norton AV 2003. I noticed that I seemed to be losing a lot of disc space so I ran a check and the NPROTECT folder of Norton Unerase Protection was the culprit. I right clicked the menu entry and used the "Delete all Protected Files (27000.) Then I uninstalled Norton and switched to PC-Cillin, smiled, and congraulated myself for solving the problem. Wrong!

The NPROTECT folder is still on my machine and taking up 150 meg. When I try to erase the files, both DOS and WIndows can't find the files. There are no extensions on the file names. I scoured the registry and removed all references to NPROTECT and Norton except for a LEGACY NPROTECT entry that won't allow itself to be deleted. No dice. I reinstalled Norton and uninstalled again to see if it would clean it up. No dice.

I'm using Windows XP - 2600 with NTFS.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this nightmare folder? I would be eternally thankful.

    Hi edjervis
I wonder if using this would help?

If Daisy's suggestion doesn't work is it possible the file(s) have the hidden attribute? Do you have windows explorer set to show all files? In windows explorer click view, folder options and click on the view tab. Tick the line that says show all files. Then try it. Don't know if it will help as you would think delete all protected files would do just that but you never know. If they are hidden files, have you tried removing the hidden attribute in dos?

    That will not work.

You will need to re-install Norton Utilities with Norton Protection enabled. RESTART WINDOWS.

Then right click on the recycle bin icon, select properties/Norton Proctection tab.

    Then select Remove Norton Protection.

Making sure that the line about emptyiing files is also checked. If that line is not checked it will not remove the files and may cause problems for scandisk and.or defrag.

Thank you all. I'm sure one of the solutions would have worked, however I seemed to have blown away my primary partition (not on purpose) and no longer have NPROTECT to worry about. A little drastic, but an adequate solution.

I'm not sure that Norton had anything to do with it, but it was coincidental. I will never again use a Norton product. I've said this before, this time I mean it.

PS - I had GoBack installed and WinRescue. Neither was able to restore my system to working order.
