Somewhere along the line it seems that Netscapes email program took over as my default email program. I would prefer Outlook Express.

Have check OE and it is marked as default mail; and have checked Netscape to make sur that it is not the default program.

However, when I click to send a page or link, the email program from Netscape starts.

How do I go about changing it back the way it was? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

    Hi RayW,

Assuming that you are still using 6.2.1, or have moved to 7.0 or 7.01:

From the Netscape 7.0/01 Release Notes:

You cannot use Outlook or Outlook Express as your default mail application after de-selecting the "Use Netscape Mail as the default mail application" setting in the Preferences dialog box.

    Workaround:
Quit Netscape if it is running.
Locate the following files in your C:\Windows\System directory and delete them:
Mapi32.dll and Mapi32_moz_bak.dll. Then start Outlook or Outlook Express and select it as the default mail application by choosing Options from the Tools menu, and clicking the General tab.
    ---

Just as a precaution, I wouldn't delete those two files. Save them to another folder on your HD, or rename the files and leave them in the System folder. You can rename them by placing an "X" at the beginning of the name:
    XMapi32.dll and XMapi32_moz_bak.dll.
Then, in the event you should ever want to make Netscape your Default Mail Program, those files will be available to you.

Let us know if this helps.

First let me sy thank you for your reply. Using IE6 and Netscape 6.2.1, haven't upgraded yet to 7.0. Anyway, tried your suggestion but didn't have the Map32_moz_bak.dll file. Even looked under hidden files.

Renamed Mapi32.dll as suggested closed program and selected OE as main email program. But still have original problem.

    Hi Ray,

Well heck! Even tho that is a workaround for NS 7.0/01, it sometimes works for 6.2x. I would go ahead and rename the mapi32.dll back to its original name... remove the X.

Go to Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System. On the right side of the window, UNcheck the boxes for the types of files that Netscape 6 opens. Be sure that "Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http:)" and "Secure HTTP (https:)" are DEselected for Netscape 6. UNcheck all other boxes.

Click on Start | Control Panel | Internet
    Options | Programs tab
Is Outlook the defaul email client?

Open Windows Explorer | View | Folder Options | File Types tab
    and see if there's a
    URL:MAILTO PROTOCOL listing.

If so, select it and click on EDIT. Where does the path point?

If you've done all the above, and it hasn't worked, then try adding this line to your prefs.js file - backup the file first:

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);

If this doesn't work, remove the line from the prefs.js file.

I noted that the last time you had this problem, after creating a new Profile, the issue with NS taking over as default Mail program disappeared. Have you tried doing this again? Just curious.

If all else fails, you can download and install the SillyDog701 Standalone Version of Netscape 7.01 without Mail & News. The download is only 10.4 MB. The 6.2.1 Version is obsolete and unstable, and it would benefit you to update. Using this Version most certainly would end your problem with the browsers battling for control of the Mail.

Have tried most of what you suggested:

    1) Mapi32.dll went back to original name.
2)Under the Advance button, I do not have Systems. What I do have is Cache, Proxy, Software Installation & mouse wheel. Therefore was unable to find http:, https; to uncheck them.
3)Under Windows Explorer/file types there was no URL:MAILTO PROTOCOL listing.
    4) Seems my search for folder/files isn't working either and could not locate "prefs.js" file.
    5) Did however download Netscape 7 both full and standard. But haven't installed yet.

My wife prefers Netscape and gets her mail thru that, while I on the other hand prefer OE.

    Hi RayW,

Seems my search for folder/files isn't working either and could not locate "prefs.js" file

Do you mean that the Windows "Find" isn't working, or you just couldn't find the file.

The file will be located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

Check this Registry Key and see if Internet Explorer is shown as the application:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\HTTP\Shell\Open\ddeexec\Application

    Let us know,

    Ramona :D

    Ramona,

Finally found the URLMail Protocall and it points to Outlook Express\msimn.exe

And under the registration key it points to IExplore.

Installed Netscape 7 and created a new profile but have created new problem. Whereas now when I try to send link or page nothing opens up.

Wife tells me Netscape is a lot faster for her.
