After a long search into the causes of HD not showing the free space remaining, now believe this could be caused by a "sensor" fault. Is this fault mechanical? or a software malfunction? It apparently means, that mechanical is none repairable but if software it possibly could be solved. I would appreciate any comments on this matter. Thank you.

hello hawk22. I have used WD Life Guard it simply shows "Pass ". HD displays the free space as 2.72TB capacity 2.72GB. Drive was sent back to WD under warranty, but I strongly believe the HD was simply returned as sent. I have another three WD HDs and all three show correct "Capacity" and "Free Space ". Thanks for your response, appreciated.

Is this the same WDC External HDD you posted in a few other threads. I doubt is it has anything to do with sensors. Try downloading and installing the software for your particular product and see what happens. Does the Device Manager show WD Drive Management Services. If not Click on the download button for WD SES Here then scroll down on the same page download and install WD SmartWare if you want to.

You are correct, this HD is indeed the same. All avenues have been checked and exhausted. The only mentioned article read, related to "Sensors ". If a software covered "sensors" and was available, this could maybe solve my problem.

I don't know if you tried my latest suggestion. If you did try this already my apologies. Every suggestion/option has just about been exhausted. The only thing left to do is my last suggestion or if you have another computer that has a working external HDD connected to it then swap that drive to the computer listed in your System Specifications and the drive in question into the other computer just to see if both drives work and if the swap is successful. Then that could be a possible solution. If it's not successful if I remember correctly from one of your previous threads is that you purchased a new External HDD than use that one. You're getting obsessed with a minor glitch. Maybe you should just dump that drive that's not working to your satisfaction before you end up in the Loony Bin. Just for future reference: it would make easier other member to assist you if you reopen your original thread. It's difficult to keep reverting to the original thread in order to follow what procedures were suggested by other members and tried by you. I wish I could have been of more help.

Yes, or if you have a USB HD dock will it show the same as an USB drive.

I fully agree with you, it is best just to forget what is after all only a glitch and does not interfere with the HD main function. Thank you for your suggestions and comments, appreciated.

Just as a comment, nearly 2 years ago I was in Penang ( Georgetown) Malaysia wanting to buy a 4TB green WD Hard Drive from their factory outlet, (huge WD factory) the guy there told me don't waste your money on a green drive either spend extra or buy a smaller one, but only buy Black.
I bought a 3 TB back in Australia for the same prize.

I do not wish to appear naïve, but as a matter of interest hawk22, is this the casing's colour that you refer too?

Yes BobbyScot,Black Label they call it. Always more expensive, but according to WD much better quality and faster, that's what they told me there.
I have a couple 500 Gig of the old PATA type and they are all working OK.

It was the Scorpio Black Series. I used them all the time. Haven't checked in quite a while to see if the series is still available. In 2010 can't remember if WDC even offered the Scorpio Black Series in a External HDD. Newegg The Green Series was for the Environment. Not WDC's best effort. As hawk22 suggested get a USB dock or USB HDD Enclosure.

Very interesting reading. In the UK, WD advertise as "Elements" "Passport" etc, can not say that I have seen them as "Green" or "Black ". You do learn something new every day thanks to the WindowsBBS members. Thanks.

WDC Scorpio Black Series was released as a 2.5" internal HDD. When inserted into a 2.5" HDD enclosure it can be used as an external HDD. I only used the series internally on my laptops. Externally I use WDC My Passport Essentials Portable 2.5" External HDD on my laptops. I liked the Scorpio Black series because it's 7200RPMs> Sometimes difficult to find for laptops.

I realise now that topic relates to" internal HD's ". I personally only use "external HD's" with exception of the "C" drive being "Internal ". As a matter of sheer interest, are Desktop or Portable most lasting and reliable or little difference?

Well Bobby, you can use any 3.5" hard drive as either internal or external inside a "External USB Case ". These days you also can have internal and external 2.5" SSD's.
Drives like the WD Elements Passport that you have, are external only since you can not remove the hard drive from the case.
I personally prefer the the ones where I can swap out the hard drives, more versatile for me.

External HD's are not any more or less reliable or longer lasting than external. My asking is, Desktop models are much bigger than the Portable. Portable can slip into ones pocket and not require a transformer.

Good and interesting reading. However, no mention as to best model "Desktop or Portable ".
