Why do some start ups show in task bar and some not?

    I have 2 identical Win7-Pro64 comp (cloned).
Both have Vipre and Malwarebytes set to auto load at startup.
Both properly show their icons in the bottom right Notification Area.

1 comp in addition to the Notiication Area also shows Malwarebytes in the Task Bar (bottom left) as well so it shows in 2 places.

Obviously I don't need either one to show in both places.
How can I prevent Malwarebytes from showing in the Taskbar and just show in the Notification Area like the other?

The Properties on both are Show Icon and Notification which I thought only applies to the Notification Area on the right.

Unpin it from the task bar.

    MrBill,

Thanks, but when I right click on it, it says "Pin this program to Taskbar" so I assume there is some other reason it shows there.

I did a Pin and then an UnPin and a reboot but it still shows up.

All I do is just right click on something that I don't want on the taskbar and unpin it and it doesn't come back.

What happens if you Right click on a clear part of the Task bar and select Properties?
I haven't got W7 to check, but I think you should be able to set things in that Menu area. Neil.

    Neil,

Thanks but right clicking in the blank space of the taskbar only shows the same Properties which when you choose Customize gets you only the same list/choices when you right click in the Notification Area. ie both cloned computers have Malwarebytes marked as Show Icon and Notifications which refers Only to the Notification Area not the task bar.

I cannot find anything that governs only the taskbar.

Right clicking on the desktop shortcut I see no setting different on the two comp yet only 1 shows MB in the taskbar.

Thanks for all the help guys but I dunno.

As I said I haven't got W7 to test, but with this comp running W10 Pro, any Icon in the Task bar that I RIGHT click on gives the option to UNPIN FROM TASKBAR.
Start > ALL Apps > right click on menu icon > Pin to Taskbar and Pin to Start are my other options. Neil.

    retiredlearner,

you're right, but as I replied further up, when I right click, it already says "Pin to Taskbar" ie it's already UNPINNED. Also, as far as I can tell all such settings are identical to my cloned comp that doesn't show MB in the taskbar.

If you are on the task bar (the one on the bottom of the screen) you should only have 2 or 3 options with most programs. Most of the times it is Unpin, the name of the program and Close window.

    MrBill,

Yes you are right, there are only 2 options (Pin/Unpin and Close) but that doesn't help since the MB shows up in the taskbar even tho the only 2 options shown on a right click are Pin and Close.

Therefore since the system thinks it is already UnPinned, I don't know what else I can do to make it permanently disappear from the taskbar.

PS At some point I'll delete MB completely and reload it since something may have gotten fouled up in the original install.

Try dragging it to a blank space on the desk top and see if it stays there after a reboot.
It won't matter if you already have a MB on the desktop already. You can always right click on it and delete the one you just dragged to the desktop.

    MrBill,

Good try but none of the icons on my taskbar can be "dragged" anywhere (and my taskbar is Unlocked).

Are you referring to left side of the taskbar Quick Launch if so there are two ways to stop the icon from appearing Orb\run then in the run command box type in msconfig.exe click the Start Up tab uncheck the entry click Apply then ok restart the machine or you can remove it completely through the registry. First back up the registry or manually create a restore point. Orb\Run command box type in regedit click OK. Navigate H-KEY-LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Delete the Malwarebytes entry. click ok. To close the open hives click on any open space in the left pane when Run highlights then hold down the left arrow key until all hives are closed either use File\Exit or red X out of reg restart your machine. My apologies if you have already tried these procedures.

    LJ,

Thanks, but I'm not referring to the Quick Launch which I don't think Win7-Pro has. Also I don't want to remove MB from msconfig since I still want it to run at startup.

I'm just trying to figure out why, in addition to showing up in the bottom far-right Notification Area (which is fine) it also shows up in the large area at the bottom of the taskbar where all the other open programs appear (just to the left of the Notification Area.

My experience with my other cloned computer only shows MB in the far right NOT the main taskbar.

My apologies. I used to use MB and removed the entry from msconfig in the registry and it still ran at startup but that was an older version. Haven't used MB in a long time so maybe the program has since changed. Sorry I could not been of more help and surely didn't mean to waste your time. Good luck I hope you get it sorted out.
