Okay, folks, maybe we are getting somewhere now. I DID go to Start>Run>dxdiag>music and I found some interesting stuff. I HAVE DLS and the ONLY item listed that would support DLS and play music was the Microsoft Synthesizer. The complication is that it is NOT listed as one of the options under Control Panel>multimedia>MIDI>single instrument. The synthesizer listed doesn't support dls and it gave me no sound when I tested it.
So what I need to do, I guess is reload drivers? ? ? I don't know how to get the Microsoft synthesizer to be listed as an option for control panel>multimedia>MIDI>single instrument.

Please be patient with me, folks. I think maybe you have almost solved my problem.

The MS synthesizer doesn't show up in the multimedia applet because it's not supposed to. It's used by directx apps to play direct music (for example, games that use direct sound to play there music). You can do some searching on the net to see if you can find a way to make it available but if there is a way, I've never found it. I think at this point I'd try reinstalling the drivers for the sound card. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to check and see if there are new ones available. What kind of sound card is it (just curious).

    Wow! Folks we're almost there. . .

My sound card, evidently, is a C-Media. I found their site and downloaded the CM18738 for my card. I installed it in my wife's computer (It's the sick one.) and BEHOLD! I have sound on two of my websites. I have no idea why it won't work on the third one. I have no trouble with my computer playing the midi.

    My sites are:www.kg6faa.com
    www.tropicstar.org

and I maintain a site for my wife's Pharr-out Red Hat Society at www.pharr-out.com. We live in Pharr, TX and that's where the name came from, and she has just started another chapter of the Red Hat Society.

Can anyone figure out why I can get MIDI sound on two sites, but not on the other?

I certainly thank all of you who are struggling so hard to help me.

Alright! It seems we're getting someplace now, however I'm not really sure why you wouldn't get sound on all web pages. I wonder if it's a problem with the page. Do you each have a computer of your own? If so can you get the sound on the page she can't. Which page doesn't work. I ask because www.kg6faa.com and www.tropicstar.org work fine for me but when i click on www.pharr-out.com, I get a directnic.com page that says file not found. If its the pharr-out.com one that's giving you trouble, it makes me wonder if there's maybe something wrong with the page (or address). Could this be the case?

You have the patience of Job - Thank heaven!

Yes, my wife and I have separate computers. Both are similarly configured. We had the motherboards upgraded at the same time. I have a 30 gig HD and she has a 6 gig, but I have a 30 gig to put in hers just as soon as we get this mess cleaned up.

Yes, it's the www.pharr-out.com site that is giving us trouble. I can get it fine on my computer. On hers, the page comes up and visually it is perfect - - just no sound.

All my webpages are redirected through directNic. The actual address of the troublesome one is: www.geocities.com/bobbadean@sbcglobal.net/index.htm - That's a page full of address just to get to the site. I don't understand why you are having trouble getting at least the video. Perhaps it was just a momentary glitch.

I know I just keep saying "Thank you for your help." That seems so inadequate, but I truly appreciate what you are doing for me.

Zander, Could it be that you couldn't get to the page because of the extra "," at the aend of the address?

At a guess, I'd say you're not hearing the music because you've got bad coding. The music file is pointed to your computer..
Hence why you hear it from there, and not the net.

My but you have good eyes Daisy!!! I hadn't noticed it. That was the reason why. redsboy, Daisy's right. I can't hear the music either when I go to the page. The code in the page is pointing to a file on your computer. Do you have the midi on your puter but not on hers. That would explain why you can hear it on yours but not hers. As I said, I can't hear it either when I go to the page so...... Check it out. :) After you change it post back and I'll see if things change here for me.

    Oh, JOY! ! !

It seems I have been helped by two sharp-eyed 'puter geniuses. Or should I say "genii?" At any rate, Zander, you got me off to download new drivers, and Daisy, bless your heart, spotted a clumsey mistake on my part. And I was so busy looking for the forest, I couldn't see the trees.

I sure thank you. The sound on some of the midi's isn't as good on my wife's computer as it is on mine, but I will worry about that later.

Again, my thanks. I'm truly grateful to you.

Oh, one other thing. My screen name. Sorta unusual I guess. I grew up in a small town. My father was a red-head, nicknamed "Red," and everyone knew him. When, as a little boy I was introduced to someone, they almost always said, "Oh, you're Red's boy. "

Glad you got it all sorted out. The sound quality may or may not be something that you'll have to live with. Check in the multimedia applet now and see what synth's are available. If more than one try the others out to see how they sound. There can be quite a difference between them. Keep in mind however, the speakers and the sound card itself can make a difference too.

That was a good catch on your part. Even if I had got to the page the first time I don't know if it would have ocurred to me to look at the code. Thumbs up to you. ;)
