Yet Another Really Annoying Windows frustration: For some reason, I cannot seem to maximise a window with a keyboard shortcut. Win+Shift+m doesn't work and Win+up arrow doesn't work. Nothing I try works. I need to be able to do this from a script and the mouse isn't reliable enough. So what is the problem now? Why yet again can't Windows do this simple thing that it is supposed to be able to do? I am running Home Premium. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Win+Shif+M is not a Windows shortcut to maximize a window. It's just to reverse Win+M

See the list: Keyboard shortcuts for Windows 7

Win+Up Arrow should maximize the window.

Yes, that is correct about Win+Shift+M but that doesn't work for me either. Win+Up Arrow definitely doesn't work. I have tried it on two different computers with two different keyboards, both the main keyboard arrows and the Numlock arrows and absolutely nothing works. Whatever I do I cannot get any window to maximise from the keyboard. And if I sound a little frustrated, it is because a number of other functions that all the shortcut sites blithely say should work, also do not. It seems to be real hit and miss. Why should this be?

Is this a desktop a Notebook? Who's the manufacturer model and version number or a Product Number(P/N), Service Tag? Some Manufacturers have ways of turning on and turning off keyboard functions.

Thanks for the response. The computers in question are all desktops. I actually have three. After my post, I discovered that the shortcuts do indeed work on one of the three, but not on the other two. The one that works is a DIY build based on the GeForce 8000 chipset running Win Home Premium SP1. The processor is AMD Phenom II X4 925. Unfortunately this is not the one I need to work.
One of the other machines is an Acer Aspire T690, E946G7 running Win Ultimate, SP1. The third desktop is a Compaq Pressario SR5085AN, Product # G8225AA#ABG, SN Aug717025H, Win Home Premium SP1. This is the one I really need to have the shortcuts working on. I don’t understand why these work on some machines but not others. They are all Windows 7 and I have not seen anything about this on the Windows site or anywhere else that discusses keyboard shortcuts.
To be clear, the regular Windows keyboard shortcuts do work on all machines, just not the ‘Windows 7’ shortcuts such as Win+Home, Win+Up Arrow, and so on. Those are the ones I need. If there is any way to get these working on the other computers I would really be grateful.

Thanks for the link. It appears to say that the Win7 shortcuts I need are not supported. Do you know more about this? Is this done through the bios? Why does this only work on some machines and why doesn't Microsoft say anything about this? I have been banging my head over this for some time now.

I know of another way, but it may not be what you are looking for ALT + Space Bar. It brings up a Context Men with the option to maximize. My win + up key maximizes the windows on both of my HP computers(Notebooks) HP Pavilion dv4-2167sb and HP Pavilion dv6tse 3000(CTO) both running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OSs. Do you have the latest keyboard drivers installed. Could also be corrupt dynamic links library(DLL) files. Outside of that the only other way would be a factory reset. That's interesting. I sure wish someone could tell me why it doesn't work on mine.

I have already tried that menu but it's not the best solution for what I want (fine control from a distance). I would really like to figure out why these shortcuts don't work for me. Not sure about keyboard drivers. I just did the regular Windows install. However, I use a KVM switch on two of the computers and one works but the other doesn't. Go figure.

The Compaq that I most need to get working has a clean OS install from a legal 32-bit Microsoft DVD. I don't see how corrupted DLLs could be an issue but I don't have a clue what is going on here anyway. Windows sure hasn't made my life any easier.

Thanks for all your effort trying to help me with this. I will let you know if I find out anything else.

Rikki, this will not help to solve your problem. I too have a HP Compac computer, and over the years this computer has flung up a few errors that proved unique to this computer, resulting to no answers or removing the particular error. At present it is, Hard drive fails to show "Free Space" remaining.

Talk about Windows not making your life easier try using win 10. You'll have a lot of fun with that. I can't even install it with out MS insisting that I need a graphics driver that's not compatible with my HP dv6. It downloads and installs the driver and quickly puts my notebook into a boot loop.

I am all too well aware of the ongoing idiocies thrown up by Windows and computers in general. I have Windows 10 on my laptop, installed as always with hope that turned into disappointment. The (new) laptop also has issues with a freezing touchpad. I have been battling these kinds of things for years but I am getting older. I don’t want to be an experimenter anymore. I just want to turn something on, plug it in, and have it work the way it is supposed to for once. But that seems to be too much to hope for. I am just really tired of these kinds of issues. Microsoft especially seems to keep ‘fixing’ things that aren’t broken, and introducing new things that are. It would be nice if they could just get it right for once.

OK I'm still trying to find an answer to this. I happen to have two identical models of the Acer computer. The one I use, which doesn't work, is running Win 7 Ultimate, build 7601. I just checked the other one, which is running Win 7 Home Premium, build 7600, and that one does work. (But the Compaq that is running the same OS version doesn't work!) So what in the name of all that's unholy is the difference?

I FINALLY found the answer to this. It was a simple setting, that Microsoft in typical fashion neglects to mention anywhere. The setting is in Ease of Access under Make the Mouse Easier to Use. If the Prevent Windows from Being Automatically Arranged box is ticked, the shortcuts in question stop working. Hallelujah.
