Hi Marv6. Do you plan on upgrading your system to Windows 10? If so then you can bypass the Get Windows 10 app and Download Windows 10 directly and install it whenever you want.

Thanks for the replies. retiredlearner , I tried your suggested link and get message that it is not applicable to my computer? I also went to Windows system 32 GWX folder and clicked on GWX.exe and nothing happened and it is not showing in the task processes. Evan thanks for the link to by pass the icon. Not yet ready to upgrade, but, wonder why the icon disappeared after my win updates on 01/13. rsinfo, there were 21 updates, mostly security updates to win 8.1 and to office. Only two were regular update to win 8.1, kb3035583 and 2976978. I uninstalled both and it did not help. What is funny is that all the links say you need kb3035583, which was not installed and yet I was getting the GWX icon until 01/13 updates. Also, after these updates the check for updates stopped connecting until I ran the win update troubleshooter and the update check started working again. Why does microsoft mess up things with the updates that are suppose to make things better????

Hi Marv6, Did you go to the link shown in the 1st link in my previous Post?
"I want to reserve my free copy of Windows 10, but I don’t see the icon on the taskbar "
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/i-want-to-reserve-my-free-copy-of-windows-10-but-i/848b5cce-958b-49ae-a132-a999a883265b?auth=1
These 2 updates are mentioned as being vital to get GWX to view.
And it should be applicable to your OS! Neil.

Neil, Yes I did. Also, both updates show on my computer. I ran a different get win 10 app troubleshooting program and the only message that I get is that KB297678 has not been run yet it shows that It not being installed is not a issue since it is installed. go figure. It also says that Edition of Windows is not eligible to get windows 10 app is also not an issue, while the other troubleshooter program in one of the links you provided says that it is the issue???

Another problem, because of the above problems I thought I might restore to just before I installed the win updates and to my surprise I found that there was only one restore point available? I had divided the win update downloads into three parts since there were 21 updates. the only restore point was for the last update of the three? I checked restore and it is activated and that this restore point only used about one fourth of the space available. I have been have using this computer for over a year and a half and am wondering why there are no other restore points available. I was able to create a manual restore point just to see if it was working. Could the installing of the latest updates have something to do with this? Also, checking for updates stopped working, but, I ran the troubleshooter for that and it worked twice, but, each time I click check for updates I get an error and then I have to run the troubleshooter again to get it working. Is there something wrong with the updates that Microsoft is providing for Win 8.1. this is the first time I have had problems with the updates for win 8.1!!!

For the record I am still trying to resolve the problems with the GWX icon and also with the system auto restore. I can do manual restores, but, the task scheduler still does not work for system restore. When I decide to upgrade to Win 10 I will take Evans advice and follow his link to download and try to install Win 10. Thanks all for trying to help me with these problems.

Were you successful in downloading the Windows 10 upgrade manually using the link that Pete provided?

Evan, there were some problems in Task scheduler and I was told that if I upgraded to win 10 the problems would remain. That apparently leaves me with refresh or restore to the original win 8.1 ,which I am reluctant to do. so I will close this without fixing the problems. Again, thanks for trying to help!!!

Evan, there are other problems with my win 8.1 such as task scheduler does not work. I was told that if I upgrade to win 10 the problem will still be there. That leaves me with refresh or reverting back to win 8.1 when I bought the computer which I am reluctant to do. Again thanks for trying to help me. I will mark as resolved, which unfortunately it is not resolved.

What is preventing you from upgrading to Windows 10 though? Have you tried upgrading to Windows 10?

Thanks Evan, If somethings are not working properly in win 8.1, will the upgrade to win10(if it works) fix these problems?

That depends on what issues you are having with Windows 8. If it was my machine, I would use this opportunity to perform a clean install of Windows 10 and then transfer your data back over to your Windows 10 system.
