I have a folder in my root directory called 6def5145e0c51bb73ce6b62a I have just upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 but the folder could have been there before, It is full of subfolders with numbers and some other files and is approx. 450Mb in size, The folders seem to all contain files with the following title
    eula.
    LocalizedData
    SetupResources.dll

I would like to know if it is safe to delete this file to regain the space ?

Hi alboy. Yes you can delete those folders if they are located in the C:\ directory as they were for Windows Updates that were installed previously so they can be removed safely.

If I delete this folder will it stop me uninstalling any updates that might cause a problem or is it just a temp folder used to install the updates ?

Its just a temporary folder that's used during the installation of the update but its not needed to remove it.

A trick I learned many years ago when wondering if safe to delete an unfamiliar file or folder (if Bing Google does not tell me what it is for) is to simply rename the file or folder by appending name with the date and the word "delete ", then see if something breaks (get a file not found error).

    To illustrate:

    Old folder name: de34juidfj277eu
    New folder name: de34juidfj277eu-2-17-16-delete

    Old file name: readmesqlexp2005.htm
    New file name: readmesqlexp2005.htm-2-17-16-delete

Then, I just go about my business for the next few days and see if everything is still working. What typically happens for me is I forget about it until weeks or even months later until I stumble on the file or folder again. By appending the folder or file name with the date and the word "delete" I can see how long it has been since I renamed it, and "delete" tells me my intentions. If all has been working since that date, I know it is safe to delete.

If something breaks, since I only "appended" text to the name instead of totally renaming it, I don't have to remember the original name - I can easily see what it was, and simply cut off my appendage.  I mean rename it back and be good to go.

That's a good thought process Bill, but my viewpoint is if you don't know what a certain folder is and you aren't sure if it can be deleted safely then you should either research the folder name, or leave it be.

Novice computer users shouldn't be going into the Users or Program Files directory and renaming folders just to see if they need the folder or not. Also many clients that I've helped, have a hard time remembering how to get to their Documents or Pictures folder so I cannot imagine them remembering which folder they renamed if they have many folders located in a deep directory on the system.

Your advice is definitely sound but users should judge for themselves if they should be messing with Program folders that they don't understand. Or they could also ask here and we can give them their answer. :p

Many thanks for all your replies as usual they are full of wisdom I will probably need to post back on the win 10 forum as I have just upgraded to win 10 and it is a voyage of discovery at the moment.

Ummm, I am guessing you missed where I said "if Bing Google does not tell me what it is for ". So by all means, I too recommend researching it first. My suggestion just allows you to safely tag the file/folder first to see if needed BEFORE haphazardly, and perhaps ultimately deleting something you need.

But beyond that, I see no reason to keep "clutter" on the disk if that is what it truly is.

I don't think you can assume anything - without thorough research and/or testing.
