If you right click on "D" partition in Disc Management, do you get 'Shrink Volume'
    available? Neil.

Might be helpful if you posted a screen shot of Disk Management.

Yes, although it is in Chinese rather than English.

I am sorry for having installed Windows 10 in Chinese.

The language is no problem - it's the graphics that count here :)

I've no idea how the D partition ended up as the first partition on the drive - this creates a problem of sorts.

Windows can’t extend a basic partition to its left so deleting the partition will not help in extending the C:\ drive ; you’ll need third-party software for that.

I have no experience of current partition software - I seem to remember using Partition Magic many years ago with success, but will leave it to others to give current recommendations based on experience.

The one thing I would suggest is to make an image of the C drive on external media prior to attempting to merge the partitions and also to ensure that you have a current backup of all your personal data.

The 14g is not worth trouble unless you desperate for space and the only way to do it is to wipe it all to merge it all.

D is to the left of C = D is the first partition and C is the second.
Does that mean that D was created before C was?

If 2 partitions were created on the drive during a clean install and the second and larger partition selected for the OS then that partition would assume the drive letter C by default.

The hard disk was removed from my old eMachines desktop, a branded computer.
If eMachines had created the first and larger partition selected for the OS, would Windows be able to merge C and D now?

Even in a perfect world you run the risk of losing everything when you merge partitions.

Why are you wanting to merge the partitions? You could simply reclaim the space and use it for storage.
