I recently decided to share a printer (wired desktop, accessed via a wireless router for my laptop).

When the desktop is awake, I can print just fine (from the laptop). When it is asleep, I cannot.

I was pretty sure that in the past, with another shared printer, I could still print from the laptop, even if the desktop was in sleep mode, but perhaps I was mistaken.

    Is this possible?

I can print from my laptop even when my desktop is powered off. Who manufactured the printer and what model is it. Is your desktop wired into the router? Is your printer wired into the router. Does your laptop have the printer software installed on it.

It is an HP Laserjet p1150w

You can print on a shared printer, even when the desktop is powered off? Interesting.

The desktop is wired both to the router and to the printer.

I do have drivers on my laptop, the printer shows up as default in my Devices and Printers window, so yes the software must be there.

I misunderstood your question. I take you need to print documents from your desktop while using your laptop.

Let's just say, I want to print documents from my laptop, onto a printer wired into my desktop. If that's what you meant by "from your desktop," then yes that's what I want to do.

Set the desktop to never sleep or hibernate set the display to turn off after a certain amount of minutes(your choice as to length of time). This way if you need to print a document that's on the desktop while sitting at you laptop you will be able to.

I can do that; but I also want to see if it is possible to print when the desktop is in sleep mode (I will end up running the desktop 16 hours a day if I can't put it to sleep, so I'd like to save electricity).

But yes, if sleep mode won't work with this, then I'll do just what you said.

Steve the OP can print a document that's on the desktop while the desktop is awake but can not when the desktop is in sleep mode.

Laptop is too far away; besides, there is more than one laptop that eventually I'd like to print from.Carrying it over and unplugging the USB chord is a bit awkward.

OK. I take it your response means that I can't put the desktop to sleep?

    lj50 - I got that part...

A shiny new wireless printer might be something to consider. All computers can print to it any time.

    That isn't working for me.

I got this wireless printer a year ago and it often goes offline, even when the router still has internet access. I replaced the router and still have problems. . I even tried a manual static IP for the printer--didn't change anything. Tried troubleshooting this with experts at the HP forum. No luck.

So instead of accessing it wirelessly, I'm working on just accessing it via the desktop, as a shared printer.

You should be able to print from a shared printer while the wired desktop is in sleep mode. I believe I was having problems with the router before, which might have been what kept me from printing from my laptop.

Just now, I printed twice while the desktop was in sleep mode, so it can be done.

Made sure to follow these instructions--this might have been what was goofing me up before:

    1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Device Manager.

    2. Expand the network device on the host machine, right click on it, click Properties.

    3. On the Power Management tab, check "Allow this device to wake the computer" option.

    4. Click OK.

I had an ethernet-connected printer on my desk-top system without wireless print capability. When DW got an iPad, I had to get a replacement printer that could handle AirPrint.

I later switched from the desk-top XP machine to a Win 8.1 lap-top (now Win 10, recently updated by MS) so we were both printing wirelessly. Unfortunately that printer, an Epson, suffered an internal mechanical failure at about 5 months, that required sending it back to the manufacturer. I junked it instead and bought an HP 3830. So far (3 months) - so good, except for a heavy thirst for ink.

To follow up my last post - does anyone with an HP 3830 know how to switch to "draft" mode when using it with Win 10? I got instructions from HP Support and was surprised that it's done from your computer rather than at the printer. Unfortunately, they're for Win 8.1, nothing remotely like what's in W-10.

I'll be e-mailing them again tomorrow, but just thought someone in this group might know.
