I did a restore on my computer this morning to yesterday and I got the
following message when I rebooted the computer:

Unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files.

    Since then, my Norton Anti
Virus icon in my start up tray has an X through it and it shows that my
Auto Protect is Diabled. It will not respond when I try to Enable it.
When I actually bring up the Norton software, it states that my
    Auto-Protect is Enabled.

I have tried another restore point but that does not help.

Go to the Symantec Help (antivirus)...and do a search for Document ID# 2000092114162106 "Error to initalize virus database scanning files after installing NAV or running Windows System Restore ".

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I downloaded the program suggested by Symantic and for some reason it will not open.

I had the same problem after system restore today...I also went to Symantec and downloaded the hawking tool...BUT, after clicking on the tool I get a message box stating that it is not a valid win32 application and it will not open! (I have Windows ME and I have no idea what win32 is.) In the meantime, I need that restoration, BUT, I also need my Antivirus in order to use my computer.
Please help and I will be indebted to you forever!
(I despise WindowsME...it is a horrible OS...nothing but problems with no solutions.)

    Fixed the problem!!

As the hawking tool would not work, I went back to the Symantec site and proceeded to the next step, which was *completely uninstall and reinstall NAV.

ecumba93...go back to the Symantec site and scroll down to the next step after *date incorrect* It will give you the directions on how to completely uninstall and reinstall
NAV. This will fix the problem...

Be sure to run Live Update after reinstalling and keep running it until it tells you that no more updates are available.
(Unfortunately I have 2001 and had to run updates from July of 2000...very time consuming!)

I hope this is clear to you...it will fix the problem. I will never run restore again if it is going to cause such a major and time consuming problem...

This has happened to me as well. Obviously there are files within NAV that need to match eachother and System Restore doesn´t replace them all.

I use Norton Ghost and have made an Image of my C: to E: and then to CDs in case of a HDD failure.

What I had to do was to start the PC from the Ghost boot disk and restore C: from the Image on E:, it took ten minutes.

After that I downloaded the Windows Updates and NAV Updates, another ten minutes worth of work.

Finally I made a new Ghost Image of the updated partition which means that I won´t have to go back to square one the next time.

I´m actually considering turning System Restore off since it doesn´t work with Norton installed but will probably set the disk space for SR to the minimum of 200MB as a start.
I don´t think I´ll ever use it again since Ghost worked perfectly.

The Ghost version I use is the one included in Norton SystemWorks Pro and I definitely think it´s worth the higher price, the difference being smaller than the price of a separate NG.
Many people claim that Norton equals trouble but not for me and I can´t be the only satisfied user ......

    Regards,
    Christer
