My old hard disk just died. It had Win 8.1 Pro installed. Though I have the latest image from which I can restore the system, I would like to go in for a clean system install.

My question is - can I straight away install Win 10 Update 2 with my Win 8 Pro key or do I have to go through the complete process of installing Win 8/8.1, activating it & then installing Win 10 ?

I don't believe you can. I have updated a couple from 7 and 8. I tried a clean install of 7 with no updates and it refused to install 19 even though it downloaded it. I just went got all the updates for 7 and didn't put anything else on and it went smooth as silk. Then I downloaded or used a CD/DVD to put on what I wanted.

Hi rsinfo, I'm using my HP Notebook 1000 which I had purchased with W8 installed. I updated to W8.1 and when W10 arrived, I Upgraded.
I wanted to change the HDD to an SSD and cloning didn't work as I wanted, so I used my W8.1 Recovery USB thumb drive to install W8.1 to the new SSD.
I installed all the W8.1 updates and when the Notebook was running sweet and the W10 Upgrade patch was installed, I let it upgrade to W10.
It's all running sweet as with Version 1511 build 10586.36 and as I wanted - a big improvement in speed with an SSD.
The Notebook starts and is fully up to speed within 15-20 seconds.
No wonder we got p----d off with XP taking up to 'time for a cup of coffee' before it was ready to go.
The method explained in Paul Thurotts should work as posted by MasterChief.
    Cheers Neil.

I am aware of Paul Thurotts article but I just wanted to know if somebody has done it before.

Furthermore, I would be installing it on a new hard disk. I am not sure if Win10 would activate or not as the activation was on the old hard disk.

I would try to install W10 as the only thing that is different is your HDD. It will tell you if there is a problem.
You may have to do it the way I described in my last Post. Neil.

If it will take the activation of 8 with an install of 8, you should have no trouble with 10.

Have got a shinning new hard disk. Would be installing Win10 Update 2 directly in a day or two and would report back on the result.

    Fingers crossed.

Installed Win10 November Update with the old Win8 key & it went flawlessly. No jumping through the loops required. :)
