Recently, after <2 yrs, & alot less than that of actual use, my CD Burner died. I had a Philips 8x4x32, not sure of model. I ordered a new 1 from Gateway, thinking there I'd be assured it was compatible & I'd be able to get free tech support. They sent me the new Roxio software with it. Unfortunately it's Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Basic. Further, it doesn't support making Jewel Case Inserts & Labels, like my previous software, Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02, that was shipped with my previous burner, also ordered through Gateway. The new burner's a Lite-On LTR 40125S, which according to Roxio's site, under recorder support, is compatible with the new software they sent me. Once again, unfortunately, my previous software is NOT.I used to be able to make the CDs, labels, inserts, & use DirectCD with version 4.02, but now with version 5, it won't support making inserts & labels. I attempted to use version 4.02, but it's not supported by the new burner. The Direct CD, Create CD, & CD Copier say drive not supported. I've yet to try the Jewel Case Creator feature in version 4.02 with the new burner. I tried just installing Direct CD from version 5, then installing version 4.02 without Direct CD. That didn't work, so finally I installed all of version 5, then only Easy CD Creator without Direct CD from version 4.02 It still says non supported drive in the 3 aforementioned features from 4.02. I still haven't had a chance to try Jewel Case Creator from 4.02 with the new burner. Hopefully at least that'll work in 4.02, since it's what's lacking in 5 Basic. I'm not about to pay for the platinum version to get what I should have in the 1st place, what should have come with the new burner, after paying too much for it.
Any helpful dialog or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks !

I'm assuming that since you checked Roxio's site that your software is up to date and doesn't need any updates. I would definitely get back to Gateway and advise them of your situation. Maybe the software is not compatible with your OS and has nothing to do with the CD burner.

Thanks for replying so quickly. When I checked Roxio's site under Recorder Support, it showed the earliest compatible software version as 5.1 & the version Gateway sent me is version 5.3
Near as I can determine, the ONLY thing it won't let me do, that I was able to do before with my previous burner & version 4.02, is design CD Labels & inserts. I already called Gateway about the problem, & they checked & said I had the right version. When I pass the mouse pointer over the options in version 5.3 Basic, it has grayed out areas, including the Jewel Case Creator, which according to the help files means it's not available in this version, & they expect me to pay $70-$80 for a new version that I should have gotten with the new burner. Even if I could get it cheaper, I shouldn't have to pay for something I should have gotten when I spent $111.30(including S&H&Tx) for, that I could have gotten down the street, after rebates, for $20-30. I don't know who the rip-off is, though, Gateway, or Roxio, or BOTH. I was hoping to convince Gateway to send me, for FREE, the platinum version I should have gotten, but so far, NO Luck. I have another problem, if you would please see my other post in Hardware. :(

I'm not sure why you think Gateway should have given you the platinum version of EasyCD, but at any rate, did you check the Roxio site to see if they offered an upgrade to the platinum version for a reduced price? There are also stand alone label programs available, just look around. Personally I would recommend using Nero. I previously used EasyCD, but (IMHO) I find Nero to be superior. Good luck.

Easy CD Creator 5 Basic shortchages people on some things after they realized they were giving away too much of the farm on 4.02

However, I had BASIC and don't recall the loss of insert-making possibility. You may want to double check your installation process. To do this correctly, you have to uninstall the program first, then re-install it. Which it sounds as if you've done a few times already.

Then as you go through the installation, don't choose the "basic" or "routine" choice (or whatever they called it). Choose custom installation and see if they give that option for insert & label making.

It may be though that your 5.3 version does'nt even give you a choice of "basic" or "custom" anymore.

i might have another suggestion for you though.

When I installed it, I went to Custom, but the only options they offered me were: Easy CD Creator, Direct CD, or Both. I tried it all ways. The Jewel Case part is integrated into the Easy CD Creator part, but is grayed out, meaning it's Not available in the Basic version of the program.

    What's your other suggestion?:(

As a tip, the Roxio versions that they "give away" with a CD burner has never been the Platinum or full version.

Even the 4.02 version had limitations. It could not make VCD.

The platinum version can make VCDs, as well as other extras.

email me for a suggestion davesmidis@lycos.com

I hear what you're saying, but I had the capability before with Adaptec Easy CD Creator version 4.02, that came with my 1st CD- RW Drive, to make CDs, use Direct CD, & make labels & inserts with Jewel Case Creator. All I want is the same capabilities that I had before, nothing more, nothing less. I don't believe that I should be penalized just because that stupid defective piece of **** i bought from Gateway 2 years ago died on me, after only making ~50 CDs, then when buying yet another from them, sticking me with new software that doesn't do what my previous software did, & not allowing me to use my previous software with the new drive. I think in the name of customer service, they should do something about it, but they're not.

I have that suggestion too :D
You cannot "upgrade" EZCD for free. Roxio is charging for EVERY version upgrade, especially for Platinum, including the label maker.
I tried to "fool" it by installing ONLY the label maker from Platinum version, then installing EZCD basic, and it won't work. I tried it the other way, installing EZCD 5 basic first, then the label maker from Platinum, that doesn't work either.
Just toss the whole bunch out the window, send the CDRW back to Gateway for a full refund, and buy a Plextor, or Lite-on with Nero 5.5.9.17 (includes a label maker, even in the bundled version), and knock yourself out.
