I am having a problem installing XP Pro on the following system:
    Epox EP-7KXA
    Athlon (Classic) 750 MHz
    S3 Viper II Video card
    Onboard sound
    20 GB HDD
    2x CD drives

XP Crashes about halfway through installation. I tried putting in a different HDD & video card, I tried using different CD Drives, but it still crashes. Any help would be appreciated.

    More info!

    XP hardware compatability tested?

Has the BIOS been flashed up to date?

Any external devices attached like USB modem, network, etc?

Are you upgrading from another version of windows or clean install?

If clean install are you installing to clean partition?

What file system, fat32 or ntfs?

At what point does it fail?

What does it say here or does it just freeze?

What is the last thing it does?

Yes, says my NIC will need drivers when I'm done.

Has the BIOS been flashed up to date?
    Yes, it has

No, but I do have a network card (not attached to network)

Clean install, clean partition, FAT 32.

At what point does it fail?
About halfway through "Installing Devices "

What does it say here or does it just freeze?
Freezes (little squares thing in the lower left corner stops moving too.)

What is the last thing it does?
Just starts installing devices, gets about halfway through and stops.

May have passed HW, but there is a problem!

I would remove any unnessesary cards (modem, sound, nic). Anything not nessesary to boot and run.

    Retry after this.

If that fails do the following.

Reverse the setting in BIOS pertaining to Plug and Play!

Clear the HD start from scratch

    Retry!

    Report back.

PS Have errand will check back 1.5 hrs.

Did what you said, got past the point where it crashed. After the whole product key and time zone thing, the screen went blank, and nada. I restarted the computer, and installation started from the beginning. I'm trying it again...

EDIT: Got it! In XP OK.
I'm going to try turning stuff back on in the BIOS 1 by 1.

    Thanks.

    10-4

So let us know what the kink was!

What all did you change? Yes 1 by 1!

Very possible it was only causing a problem during install. May be able to turn and reinstall all with no problem. Hope so.
