mouse just started freezing a few days ago, never really happened before, have to shut down manually. Last time there was a loud buzzing sound. It starts back ok fine when I start up with the power button. ctr/alt/del doesn't work when it freezes

What Norton product are you using. Did you use Startup Manager if so any delays you invoked remove the X from the delay list if you don't Norton will keep rearranging the startup items.

Was the Norton program enabled and running in the background when the computer froze?

Can you reproduce the freezing on demand or does it happen at complete random?

I'm using Norton version 16. Yes it freezes randomly , it actually froze again as I was responding and nothing was really running except the browser , avast., the router. I don't have Norton running in the background. Is the hard drive possibly going? the computer starts up fine after I power it down

One thing I can add is it seems if a browser is not open and I'm not opening websites it doesn't freeze but I'm not 100% sure.

Are you running the Norton Anti Virus that's included with the program and Avast anti virus. If so the two anti virus protection programs shouldn't be enabled at the same time.

What version of Norton 16 are you using? Ghost, Utilities, Internet Security???
I would be wary of Norton in any form being used with another AV.
Why not try MSE/Defender and see if you still have the 'freezing'.
My Vista 32bit works fine with MSE as the AV - all on it's own. No freezing or lockups. Neil.

I can try that but I don't think the Norton is related, I've had it for about 6months but this freezing just started about a week ago. I'll post the Norton version next post I'm running a memory test. I can uninstall Norton as well too.

Lets try runing Check Disk on the hard drive to repair any file system errors.

To do this click Start< Computer. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties. Then once the hard drive properties dialog box opens, click on the Tools Tab. Under where it says Error-checking click on the Check Now button. Ensure that both the Automatically fix file system errors and the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkboxes are both checked. After that is done click on the Start button. Check Disk will ask you to schedule the disk check when you restart your computer. Click on yes to do this and then restart your computer to allow check disk to run.

Let me know if the freezing still occurs.

Hi gpb59, Have you run a HDD diagnostic test? You haven't filled in your System Details, so we don't know what brand of HDD you're running. Neil.
