Specifically, if I have W7 on my machine, with a bunch of software, and I update to W10, will there be a full recovery option to allow me to re-create my system, including installed software?

That is, of course, without having to re-install W7, all my software, AND re-do the update to W10?

I'm a little dubious whether the W10 update is a good idea, at the current time, but it looks like MS is pushing us into it, so it's probably coming sooner or later...

Hi stelliger. Before upgrading to Windows 10 especially coming from Windows 7 you should read this article and then make up your mind, Windows 10 is Great, Except for the Parts That Are Terrible.

To answer your question, there is a rollback option to go back to Windows 7 from Windows 10 but it may not work all that well and there is no guarantee that you won't have problems after the rollback.

There is a folder windows.old that should allow you to revert to win 7. You may have to reinstall some programs and apps. It would be wise to back up you system before installing the free upgrade to windows 10.

Thanks for the response, but a recovery option back to W7 isn't what I meant.

What I wondered is, will there be a way to create a set of install disks AS 10, so that I could bring the system straight to the point I left it, as a W10 install, without having to install W7 and THEN W10 all over again? (In the case of a catastrophic crash or drive failure)

The items you can create would be Windows 7 DVD and a Windows 10 DVD which would just have the operating system on the physical media.

If you want to have a complete backup of your system before installing Windows 10 then you can create a system image of your hard drive which includes all of you programs and the installation of Windows 7 so you can restore the entire system image in case you don't like Windows 10.

If you do like Windows 10 then you can create a system image of your Windows 10 system instead.

Right. And then, if your hard drive dies, for example, you can then recover all without having to reinstall W7, then upgrade (again) to W10. Windows 10 itself has such backup and recovery features built in that work well. But of course there are 3rd party applications for this also such as EaseUS ToDo Backup or Acronis True Image.

Before I installed Win 10, I cloned my system drive just in case something went wrong. I had an old copy of True image that I used on my old XP system. I figured it was too old so I downloaded the newer version from Acronis. I had a problem with it as it wanted to partition my drive and I didn't want that. I wanted one drive with no partitions. I tried many times and it always came up wanting to add several partions. I finally took a chance and went to the older version. I had to tweak a few things, but it cloned the whole thing with no problem. I never was a fan of multiple partitions on a system drive. My 10 install went without a hitch.
