We just bought a brand new Windows XP to replace our old used Windows 98.Now I get error messages boxes popping up when I ty and install Comman & Conquer(C&C) and Red Alert C&C and now Shanghai Great Moments double pack. Those error messages almost always say Need DirectX5 can only install on Windows 95 or something to that effect. How can I fix it?Why is it happening?
P.S. I have been able to install and play Starcraft,Red Alert 2(C&C),Tiberian Sun (C&C),Mahjongg Madness.

Goto windowsupdate.microsoft.com and select yes when it asks you to install app. Click the "Scan for Updates" button and make sure you have all the latest patches installed.

There are compatibility updates that are available through this site that fixes these problems.

Post back if still having problems.

Install the Compatibility Updates as suggested .. that would be the best thing to do. However, if that still doesn't work (because I know for a fact that Red Alert -- bloody good game -- doesn't work on NT systems) try this.

Right click on the executable file. Choose Properties.
    Click the Compatibility tab.
Under Compatibility Mode, choose the Os you want the program to run in, preferably Windows 98.

This worked for Episode I Racer, which originally wouldn't run on an NT system.

    Hi,

Sometimes even the Compat updates won't work. Some programs have to be redesigned or patched for XP...

There is a handy feature in XP that lets you run any incompatible software as if on a previous platform. Install the the software, do any necessary updates, and then if it still doesn't run correctly, right click the executable file (find this under the properties of the shortcut). Select and left click the "properties" of the executable file on the drop down list that appears. Click the "Compatibility" tab and then in the drop-down list choose the platform you want the application to be fooled into running under (for games, probably Windows98). That should fix any problems you're having...
