I have been running a W7 Pro OS for some years now. I have three hard drives installed.
I created a seperate 25GB partition (H) on one of the spare hard drives that was not the C drive.
I installed W10 in (H), from a downloaded "setup" app from MS.
On turning on the PC I get the choice of what OS to run, W7 or W10.
W7 runs just as it used to.
W10 loads and opens as I would expect, but is apparently not activated. It will not accept the W7 Key, and I don't know how to obtain the W10 activation Key. I had assumed that as W7 is activated and associated with the same mother board, that would allow me to use W10 fully activated as well. Can I activate W10 or must I puschase an activation key for W10 Pro, which seems to go against the MS offer of a free OS upgrade to holders of W7/8 licences.
I want to run both OS systems on my PC to see if I can get used to W10

    Thanks for your help,

    Regards

    David D

From what I understand - the Win 10 freebie isn't a two for one sale. Meaning they are giving it to you to upgrade/replace an existing OS.

Bare minimum, you have to upgrade an existing OS. Again, from what I understand, after you upgrade an OS you are free to install it on a separate drive.

Have you tried the Product key furnished by MS in the Insider Program?
I think Arie put a Thread on about the option to burn a DVD or USB using the Media Creation Tool. Neil.

Thanks Steve. What I want is W7 on my C drive and W10 on my H drive so I can dual boot.
If I upgrade my W7 to W10 so it is activated, opt to revert to W7 and then load W10 to my H drive it should be activated and usuable.
I then will have W7 on my C drive, and W10 on my H drive. Just what I have now, except for the activation. Why oh why do I have to jump through hoops, all I need is an activation code and I will have what I can have by the hoops method.

Thanks Neil, where would I find the activation key in the Insider program, (or what is it).
I burned a DVD from MS and thats how I got W10 installed on H, but can't do much with it!!

You could purchase Win 10 and do a dual boot.

It has just occured to me.
I have a partition G (12.5 gb NTFS) that has a clone of my OS W7.
Could I boot to this, and then upgrade on top of that W7, which will give me a W10 OS that has been activated. Or would it ? Any thoughts as to if this might work ?
How would I boot to a specific partition ?

Indeed Steve, it is just that they are offering a free OS upgrade, and I don't seem to be able to take advantage of it unless I load it on top of W7, revert back to W7 and then download it again to H for a dual boot system. Or Pay over a £100 for the priveledge

And thus the reason it's called a free UPGRADE.

You either have to work your buns off or pay through the nose;)

The whole idea of the free upgrade is Microsoft wants every one on the same OS Windows 10. If MS lets you dual boot to an older operating then that defeats their goal. Try reading this article: No Dual Boot with Free Upgrade
