To avoid anyone getting to my computer on line overnight, it has always been my procedure to shut it down at bedtime.

Since getting this Win 8.1 laptop, I'm annoyed by the time it spends at start-up installing updates. This morning it took almost 45 minutes, during which it said "getting Windows ready" twice. Both times it went back to more updates. After the third batch, it completely shut down and restarted itself from the "Dell" screen. Updates show up about every 5 days or so, but today was the longest "downtime" I've experienced - most are less than 15 minutes.

I'm glad to be a retiree and don't have work schedules to meet using this POS.

Do other users of 8.1 experience this?

Hi Frank. It depends on how many updates you need to install on your system as the configuring time for Windows Updates will vary from system to system. Have you opened Windows Update and manually checked to make sure your system has all the latest updates installed?

    Evan:

Since this process occurs a couple of times a week, I'm assuming it's up to date before the next one fires up. For a software package that's been on the market for a while, I wonder why there's so much update activity.

An Apple computer in my life is looking more and more probable if Microsoft keep screwing up. Win 10 is going to be the watershed for me, so I'm going to wait until January to download it to give those loony tunes in Redmond a chance to get it somewhere close to "marketable ".

Well you should check Windows Update to make sure that Windows 8 isn't installing the same updates over and over again. I haven't encountered this issue on Windows 8 systems so you might try either adjusting the Windows Update settings to Notify before installing updates or run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command from an elevated Command Prompt if you suspect there to be Windows Update corruption.

Thanks, Evan. I'll look into that. I'll mark this thread closed.
