I just upgraded to XP Home and lost my Word97 app that came installed on my Compaq with no CD or manual and alas, no Product Key.

I have managed to save the Word97 files from my former XXCopy of my old C: drive. But when I click on Set up/Install it asks for my 20 digit Product ID.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Kerry

You must call Compaq to get a product ID.

If the XP upgrade did not wipe the HD completely, or saved previous OS info, then the product key may still be in the registry.

    Thanks TonyT:

I have an email into Compaq to ask them for a key, however, can you give me a clue as to how I could extract the key from the registry. All the files that used to be Win98SE are now located in D: but I don't know what folder to look in.

    Any suggestions would be apprecaited.

    Thanks,

    Kerry

Compaq just replied that I should contact MS.

Since all of the files are still on the D: drive, if the D: drive is a second hard drive you can change the jumper and CMOS settings to make the D: drive the C: drive, disconnect the current C: drive for now. Boot from the Win98 drive.

Run Regedit and look in the Registry key:

    HKLM\Microsoft\Office\office version\Registration\ProductID

where office version is the version of office that's installed, i.e. 8.0, 9.0 etc. This probably won't be the number you'll need to use to install Office with, but MS should be able to use this number to help with the correct install number.

FYI, even though there may be an Office SETUP.EXE file on the drive, you'll still most likely need the CD disk to install Office. That SETUP.EXE file just starts the install, you'll be prompted for the disk so the install program can copy the files.

I don't recall ever seeing a Compaq computer that had Office installed by Compaq. If Office was installed when you purchased the system, it may have been installed by the place you bought the system from. You might want to contact them too.

Thanks, I think you're right, that even if I did get the Key the install would eventually ask for the CD.

I bought it through Office Max three years ago and they didn't install it.

If the info is still on the other drive - i.e. the D: drive is still setup the same as it used to be when it was the C: drive (a bit more info on what you've done and how you did it would be helpful) - it may be possible to import Office and all of it's settings.

I haven't worked with WinXP very much at all, but I've heard it's got some type of application that will import your programs, settings etc. from another system/hard drive. Couldn't hurt to look into that. Maybe some of the folks that hang out in the WinXP forum would have some info on that application.

There are also third party programs available that are supposed to do the same thing, import programs/settings from an old system to a new system. They might do what you're looking for too. Never used on myself, and I don't have any links or opinions on them.

    Thanks,

XXCopy should have made an exact copy of the C: drive onto the D: drive. Maybe the program importing app will still work - couldn't hurt to try :)
