I have tried to install two different media readers to a USB Hub. Each time the device seemed to install properly and the device would work properly during the initial installation, but when I rebooted I utlimately got an error message that said:

"An error occurred during the installation of the device. The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance."

With each device all my attempts to reinstall after the intial installation have been unsuccesful. With respect to the first device I had the manufacturer's installation CD and tried to find drivers on it that would fix the problem but that did not work.

Might the problem be the fact that I am using a hub and if so would installing another USB port to the computer solve the problem?

    Welcome to the board.

If that were true it could be tested by installing this device stright to the USB port on the computer and not the HUB.

    Do any USB devices work?

    If not....

Make sure you have no errors in device mng or Unknown devices. If no obvious errors or Unknowns then remove the hub device then the USB device then scan for hardware changes and restart.

    Report back.

I have the same results. A removable disk (E) is recognized but the reader does not transfer the images from the compact flash card.

    Hmmmmm

Do you have any errors displayed when attempting this?
What about errrors in the device manager especially for USB?

Sounds like an Application or maybe hardware problem since the drive E: is recognized and you have no errors in device manager or reported when you try to use it.

Confirm? Drive is recognized, no application errors and no Device Mng errors. If so this may not be a USB error at all.

    Try a different flash card.

I am no longer getting the missing drivers message, and Windows Device Manager now says that the device is properly installed. But I tried another flash card with the same results. I have sent a tech support request to the device manufacturer. Perhaps the device is the problem. I'll let you know. It seems strange, though, that I have had similar problems with two distinctly different devices. If you have any other thoughts, I appreciate having them. In the meantime, thanks for your help.

It appears windows USB and applications are OK. Could still be one of them though.

Now points more to reader device (evidenced by same problem with second flash card).

Do you know of anyone with a reader like yours, to try for trouble shooting this?

PS since removing and reinstalling USB in device mng perhaps your other devices are cured?

As I asked before do any USB devices work?

Yes. all of the other USB devices work, but they always have. It's only the media readers that are giving me the problem.

I think it is time for them to give you further support. Call them since other devices work, does not apear to be USB related.

But have you visited their website and have the latest drivers?

Are you running SP3? USB support was improved (especially for camera support and flash card reading, etc.) so I have read. I know when I installed SP3, ALL my USB problems went away.

    Good Luck

    The Saga Continues

Whereas MY OS seemed to be rcognizing the media reader as evidenced by a removable disc icon in My Compturer, and Device Manger said it was properly installed, suddenly the icon disappeared and when I touble shoot the USB, I get an error message saying that drivers are not installed. So once again the drivers have disappeared. I still have a support request pending with the device manufacturer, which thus far has failled to respond, but it would again appear that my OS is losing or failing to recognized the device drivers.

I think I've resolved the problem.

I finally was able to speak with a tech support representative of the device manufacturer. He said that it is not uncommon for their device to work on iinitial installation with Windows 2000 using 2000 drivers, but that those drivers are not the correct drivers. I had previously tired to install the manufacturer's drivers from its installation CD without success. This time I carefully made sure that all unused USB ports were uninstalled and that the device itself had been completely uninstalled. In short, I made sure that this attempt to install the device was made on a completely clean slate without rements of prior attemtps on the system. This installation appears to have been successful. I have rebooted twice without loss of drivers. I thank mflynn and Top Dog for their help.
