Problem waking computer from hibernation using keyboard only.

I am trying to option my newer home-built desktop computer with Windows 8.1 to wake up from hibernation using only the keyboard vie the Control Panels Power Options and my old (USB "Dell keyboard" & Wireless Logitech (M510) mouse). Note.. The old hardware worked on my old home-built system using Windows XP Pro to wake my old computer from hibernation using only the keyboard.

Results are: Moving my mouse still brings the newer computer out of hibernation even thou I optioned the power setting to only allow the keyboard to bring the computer out of hibernation and the optioned the mouse not to. (Keyboard does work as optioned)

Reason / problem for using just the keyboard is: The mouse is too sensitive and sometimes just walking into the room or closing a draw on the desk wakes up the computer. Using the keyboard was hit and miss when trying to wake on the newer computer.)

I thought maybe because I needed to extended the USB connection by 4 feet there was a voltage or signal problem and or the new OS & hardware didn't like the older hardware.

I purchased a new keyboard and mouse. (Microsoft Wireless 800 Desktop). Problem is both the new mouse & new keyboard bring the new computer out of hibernation despite having the options and setting the options to only allow the keyboard to bring the computer out of hibernation.

I assumed that since I had separate "Power Options for Hibernation" in the Windows 8.1 Control Panel I would be able to option each wireless device as or if needed... I also assume that I set the options correctly...

    Anybody got any thoughts?

    thanks...

Have you set the keyboard in the BIOS? Neil.

Look under the various "Wake on..." commands for "Wake on Keyboard ". As for you mouse being too sensitive, what we used to have to do was flip the mouse on its back when stepping away from the computer to avoid heavy footfalls and other vibrations from keeping it awake, or constantly waking it.

Thanks for the reply's, I looked in the ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 UEFI (BIOS) and didn't see any specific reference to allowing or not allowing the keyboard or mouse to bring the computer out of hibernation. But to be honest some of the terminology was way over my head..

As for the "Wake on Commands ".... I looked at many examples online for ways to set the Power Options to "Allow" the keyboard and mouse to "Wake up the Computer ". I do believe I have correctly optioned to "Allow the Keyboard" to "Wake Up the Computer" and "Not Allow" the Mouse to "Wake Up the Computer ".

When I scroll the the area on the screen to (Turn off the Computer) I only have three options to choose from: "Hibernate ", "Shut Off" or "Restart ", so I assume I correctly optioned out any way to allow the computer to choose "Sleep" over "Hibernation ".

I will try turning the mouse upside down to "trick it" into not Waking the Computer, but must add this thought... After all these years why can't there be a better option?.. Score one for Man this time, in the battle of Man vs Machine..

    Much Thanks for the help..

My Asus motherboard has in the BIOS > Advanced > Power on by PS/2 Device > Enable/Disable.
If you're happy with the replies and feel you have your answers don't forget to mark as "Resolved ". Thanks Neil.

My MB does not have any PS/2 connections on it.. and using a PS/2 to USB adapter is not in the picture.. and probably would result in the same condition.. For now I'm just going to have to gentile around my mouse..

    much thanks for the assistance..

    Hello Neil,

I did not see anything specific to "Power On" for each individual USB devices or ports.. but if there were separate options, my Microsoft Wireless 800 Desktop... the keyboard & mouse are both connected vie the same wireless dongle.

I do have a option for USB Support to option all USB Port as "Disable ", "Full" or "Partial" ..

Disable = All USB Devices are not available until after system is booted up.
Full = All USB Ports will be available during POST.
Partial = Only USB Ports with Keyboard & Mouse will be detected during POST.

My setting is "Partial" both my Keyboard & Mouse will be detected during POST. (There's no option to just choose one or the other)

I guess if the option would allow.. I could take the battery out of the mouse and use the Keyboard to bring the computer out of Hibernation, while using a different wireless mouse & dongle in a 2nd USB port and then "Disable" that port so it won't be available until after the sys is up and running, but the 3 options are for all the USB Ports, can't individualize each Port setting.

    Much thanks..
