Resolved What do I do with an iso file and a recovery from backup?

On my netbook, Win7 SP1 home edition I installed a free backup utility called Todo. I did a disk image and I made a bootable emergency disk with the software. I then burned it to a disk. What would I do with this iso file (Linux based) in the event of a needing to reinstall operating system? Fortunately I have never had to do it, but want to be prepared. (I have Acronis on my main PC).

 

You have to boot the computer from the bootable cd and then restore the image back to the computer. That's in a nutshell. The actual steps depend on the software used.

 

Does an iso file burned onto a CD make it bootable? Do other files need to be on there?

 

Hi Alicia J, Just put the CD in your Netbook drive and 'browse' the contents. You don't have to "RUN" it to see what has been 'burned' to the CD.
I just inserted my W8.1 my System Repair DVD and the first file shown is "Boot ". Neil.

 

The recovery/backup software create a bootable disk either through the interface or by providing some ISO file which can be burned on to cd/dvd.

If you want to be sure, place the burned cd in the cd drive & boot from it. You should see the recovery program interface.

 

I did stick the CD in the CD drive and rebooted but I guess I have to press F8 or the F5 or some other key to be able to choose what to boot from.

 

I'm using W8.1 and putting any disc in a drive brings up a menu in the upper right of the screen asking what I want to do with it.
If I put the disc in and shut down and rebooted - it would start from the disc or ask me to tap a key to start from the disc.

I think on W7 you should get a similar request but I would need to change HDD's to check.
If you put the disc in your CD/DVD drive and then Right click My Comp/This PC > Open > Right click on the Drive which has your disc in it > Menu will give you choices to browse disc or open disc.
Files/Folders should then be displayed indicating whether you have a 'boot' burned to the disc. Neil.

 

You have to indeed some key to change the boot order. The key depends on the system concerned.

I tried all kinds of keys. I get advanced options but I don't know how to get it to boot from CD. I can't find a key for boot menu.

You had an option to make a WinPE or Linux Recovery disc/USB drive.
All the info required is in the Manual. Neil.

 

I didn't download the manual. I did some reading on their website. I made a WinPE CD-R
but I can't get the netbook to boot from it.

 

Found this on Google Search. A missing instruction when building a Win PE bootable disc.

Dont forget to add boot.wim
The instructions in step two leave out one important step. The sources directory must have a boot.wim file.
Here is the command:

redtiredlearner, I think she is not able to boot from cd as it isn't the first boot device. It has to be set in BIOS & she is unable to do it.
