I will leave you with Evan, but consider the other software I suggested. Glad to have been of service. :)

Hopefully these steps should resolve the error message.

    1. Download and install the latest version of the Windows Update Agent.
    2. Reboot the computer after the Update Agent installs.
    3. Once the computer has rebooted click Start< Administrative Tools< Services.
    4. After the Services window opens make sure that both the Automatic Updates service and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) are set to Automatic and are Started.
    5. Once those services have been verified as working then attempt to open Windows Update again using Internet Explorer 8.

It happens with xp, that can be expected, you are patched with the latest security updates atleast. See if Evan has anything else to say, I tend to stay away from update issues, especially for xp machines.... I only like to post what I know works for update issues, too much guess work.

Also, you can keep checking here and there with 360, to stay patched up. :)

    Alright lets try this method.

Click Start< Run type cmd and hit enter.

When the Command Prompt window opens type regsvr32.exe Wups2.dll and hit enter. Then restart the computer.

After the computer restarts see if you can access the Windows Update website.

Also I've heard of this issue occurring if you don't have all of the required versions of .NET Framework installed. Do you have .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0, and 3.5 installed along with .NET Framework 4.0?

Is Internet Explorer 8 working properly on other websites? Have you installed the latest version of Adobe Flash Player as well?

I tried your fix, no joy.

Then I installed .net frameworks and tried to install AFP, got an error with AFP telling me to download again.

On some sites they don't display properly due to blocked content, certificate errors, etc.

    Still no joy

Download Adobe Flash Player from here, Flash Player 16.0.0.305 (IE).

After it installs let me know if the Windows Update website is working. Also did you install .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0, and 3.5?

The link redirects me to the adobe.com download page for AFP from the filehippo site. Where again I get the error.

Yes, I installed all the frameworks.

Yes it is the same error message.

I downed and installed your links, still no joy.

Upon install of update agent, 360 total security tried blocking the install on several occasions, stating that it was installing trojans. I chose to allow all.

Upon restart I received notification of an unreported software issue.

Did you allow the Microsoft add-on to run when you visited the Windows Update website?

When does the error message occur? Do you see the Express and Custom options in the Microsoft Update page? Does the error message give you an error code?
