This just started..when I restart my computer I get a message saying that it can't find the file: "C\Program Files\HP Deskjet 710C Series\EREG\remind.sch ". I have no idea what is going on--I don't even have this printer any more. I tried to do some homework before writing this such as looking in Files & Folders for anything to do with the Deskjet 710C as well as the Control Panel Add/Remove programs--nothing came up in either place. Any suggestion? I'll surely appreciate it! Thanks!

Look in the System.ini and in the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys

The easiest way to check those and more is to go to Start > Run and type in sysedit then hit OK

Another place to check would be in msconfig under the Start tab (Start > Run msconfig > OK)

Did you uninstall all of the software associated with the HP 710?

Sorry but I need some further assistance--what am I looking for in the sysedit and when I find it what do I do? I had already looked in msconfig and find nothing to do with my 710. As far as I know I uninstalled all of the software associated with the 710 but if there is a way to be sure, let me know. I appreciate the help!

    pkl,
The uninstall of the Deskjet HP710 has left behind a registry entry that it should have removed.

Backup your registry - post if you need info.
Click the start button and choose Run.
    Type regedit.exe.
In the regedit window, click Edit and then Find.
    In the search field, type
    EREG\remind.sch

When the entry shows up, right click it and choose delete.
    regards

    pkl,
There are many way to back up the file that needs editing as I suggested. Depending on your Windows version, you may have in Start/Accesories/Backup, the Win98 utitilty Backup.
The file that needs cleaning is in the Windows folder and is called
system.dat. You can use the Backup program to save it.
If you incorrectly modify this file with regedit as I explained above, then you can restore it from the copy you made - also using the Backup program.
It is always a good idea to save your system files regularly.

Anyway, we will clear your problem by another method this time.
This way, you have little to do - just wait ...
    - Click the start button
    - Click Shutdown
    - Click the Radio button - Restart in DOS mode
    - Click OK

The PC will re-boot and you will get a black screen, that simply has

    C:/Windows

    Type this ..

    scanreg.exe /fix

    and press the Enter key.

WAIT! it wil take a few minutes maybe.

You will get another black screen with

    C:/Windows

Press and hold down BOTH the Ctrl and Alt keys and then press the Del key.

Your PC should reboot without the error message you have been experiencing.
    regards

Well, I restarted in MS-Dos--took a long time then got the message "Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up disk space on your Windows drive. If that doesn't work then you will need to install Windows to a new directory ". Pressed ok and that was when the fun (?) started. Couldn't get out of MS-D0s--finally started in safe mode and went to help where it said to type in "exit" after C:/Windows. Tried that and finally got back into Windows 98. Whew! Any other suggestions? Appreciate it--was in a panic when didn't know how to get out of DOS--maybe I should change to "beginner "!

I've found that HP uses the data string titled eregfinished to call for registration periodically. If you have uninstalled improperly, this string will get left behind and cause a problem like you have.

Do this; click START > RUN > type regedit (press enter) > click on My Computer at the top left field (to focus your intent) > click EDIT > FIND > and type eregfinished (press enter). If and when you get a results field, check that the value string listed on the right-hand side ends with the digit 1. If it ends with a zero, double click that string and type a 1 in the field where you see the highlighted zero.

That may well be all that's needed to take care of your error message.

Another method would be to re-install that HP printer and uninstall it properly.

You could also use RegCleaner to clean up the Registry and it would likely get rid of this error and perhaps other unneeded items as well. RegCleaner is available here. Post back it you need help interpreting what it tells you. It's a relatively safe software but it never hurts to be extra careful.

    Cheers. :)
