In lieu of the > sign that keeps track of the order of an email exchange, a correspondent of mine complies that my emails show a vertical line at the left, and when he goes to the last line, and presses ENTER to start an answer, the lines go down, so that he cannot start a fresh answer. When he sends the mail back to me, with or without any answer, I can see the lines meaning, I guess, that it is HIS software that adds them.

I've been sending emails to myself, and changing Options for Read and Send, I wasn't able to reproduce the problem.

In my OE6, formatting is HTML, indenting is enabled, and encoding is "Quoted Printable ".

    Thanks in advance

There are three different types of indentation marks that OE allows. These are >, :, and |.

This selection is made in OE by clicking on Tools|Options and then selecting the Send tab. Click on the Plain Text Settings to the left of Mail Sending Format and check to see what is selected in "Indent the Original Text With when replying or forwarding ".

Set up your OE to send in plain txt and you will not get those lines.

I have my XP System running OE 6 set up for plain text and I still see them. If you don't want to see any indentation marks you need to remove the tick from "Indent the Original Text With" but the drawback in doing so is that your messages will not be indented at all.

My bad. I wasn't fully grasping the situation guivon was explaining. After reading your responses and then looking at guivon's original post it would appear that the friend is attempting to add a reply at the end of a received message, not at the beginning, which was sent in html format. I am able to replicate this after switching to html mode.

Your response is correct, that is; if the sent message is in plain text the person replying to the message can simply delete the last > and add new text at the bottom of the message, but this can not be done when replying to a message sent in html format as it will simply cause the line | to be extended.

    Sorry for any confusion.

Thank you, Tony and Rod. I think that you got it.

It is a FULL, bold, vertical, line (or several parallel lines), which adds one instance of itself with each answer. (Sorry I cannot show an example, as this media does not enable inserts or HTML formatting, but I think that you have it right. And forgive me for my bad English, which didn't enable me to explain the problem correctly).

The last paragraph from Rod's message is particularly enlightening, because this is exactly the problem: not being able to insert text in the middle of a message, or to start an answer from the end, so as to answer to a specific paragraph or continuing a message received.

The only way out is to post a full answer at the beginning (even at the end one cannot)

Now, I want to ask the key question:

If I want to use HTML formatting, is there any way of getting rid of the vertical line/s thing? I found one way, which is to check "plain text" in the answering window, and then reverting to HTML, so as to be able to format my answer. But then, all the previous formatting is lost forever. ;)

    Thank you very, very, much

Your option is to set up OE to reveive and compose in plain text AND set it up to "reply to sender in same format in which it was sent to you ".

Now, the real crux of th ematter is this: Why do you want your reply BELOW the received message? Common practice is to put your reply ABOVE the original message or to insert your replies in between lines of the original message.

Putting your reply below the original message is (1) slower, (2) confusing because the receipient may not realize that your reply is below.

    Shameless promotion:

You could also use a better email program rather than OE. Right here at infinisource.com is one of the best email programs around. It's called Calypso. Right now it is the full featured program for FREE, for a limited time. Get it while you can. It's much beter than OE and "no vertical lines ".

    Thank you, Tony.

    1) About this Calypso program, they write:

"Please note that this version has some minor issues running under Windows 2000 and Windows XP "

So, I prefer to wait till the shareware, and if necessary spend a few bucks for a bug-free version, support and free updates.

    2) Many of my friends are using, instead, Incredible Mail. I am not tempted, because I am too conservative, and don't love gimmicks. I leave them for my grandchildren

    3) About your question: when I correspond with friends, we like the conversation system, which is to insert Q & A as we write. This is one of the great things of electronic mail, that were not available to us when we were young, eons ago.

    4) I've found a getround: when I receive the message in HTML, I switch to plain text (which removes any formatting of the previous message, including the infamous lines); then, I select again HTML, and so I am able to insert my text in the colour and font of my choice.

    Thanks again,

PS: I don't believe that Bill Gates will abide by better software than MS'. He must have some rabbits under the sleeve.
