Recently I did another precarious windows update and now when I login with my windows account, I get the black screen of death (with a cursor). I can use ctrl-alt-del to get to task manager and go to the 'Processes' tab and kill the 'explorer.exe' that's running and can run a new explorer.exe from the 'Applications' tab and clicking on "New Task" and then the desktop shows up fine (which is hardly a fix). Baffling why that works since explorer.exe is the same program in both cases.

Problem then is that none of the Startup processes actually have started even though if I run 'msconfig' I can see that they are all still checked and SHOULD run at boot.

SOOO, how can Microsquish continuously put out updates that mess up windows >.<

I've searched the net for countless possible solutions but cant find one to fix my problem. I even tried repairing and restoring to a previous restore point. Still no luck.

Anyone else have a possible fix for the black screen and why my startup processes won't run even with the ridiculous workaround?

    thx!

Did you download and install KB3004394. Navigate Orb\Control Panel\Programs and Features. In the left pane click on View installed Updates. Type in the search box KB3004394. Delete it. That's how I fixed mine.

On that link I had already tried "Check for registry issues" and "Start the computer in safe mode and run System Restore "

I now tried the option to update video drivers but it ends up saying they are already up to date <shrug>

Seems to me that explorer.exe just isn't running properly after I login because if I stop it then rerun it in task manager I get to the desktop fine. There's also my issue where the programs in the Startup tab in MSCONFIG are NOT running when I do get to the desktop. Have no idea why that would happen.

Ok I just tried a clean reboot but it still gets stuck at the black screen and I have to stop and rerun explorer as before to get to my desktop.

In safe mode I don't get the problem, so not sure what else to try.

I don't use that graphics, I have an AMD Radeon HD 5450 card in my Aspire, and I checked the latest drivers and they are the most recent. This can't be a video problem since when (as I've said before) when I kill explorer from the task manager and rerun it again as a new process I get to the desktop fine).

I'm still trying to figure out why programs checked in Startup in MSCONFIG don't actually run

This is a twofold problem .. it may stem from the registry .. hard to tell.

1- black screen .. but killing explorer and restarting it works .. I get to desktop (again.. hardly a fix)

2-everything checked in msconfig startup tab doesn't run at boot yet it SHOULD

    --

There is something that seems to stop programs from running even though the windows system itself is saying they should run at login .. I'm still looking for a solution but.. seems like explorer isn't actually running at login and any of the programs that should boot at login .. don't

Do you have a Windows 7 DVD available that you can use to repair your system?

No .. I have a restore partition as so many companies do now.. but how if I even had them would that help? What/how would I restore from a disk that is different from the restore partition on my computer?

You would use a Windows 7 DVD to repair your Windows 7 OS and if that doesn't work then we can try a repair install of Windows using the DVD.

As long as you are using a Windows 7 DVD that is the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed then there won't be any problems.

A recovery partition will only allow you to restore your computer back to factory settings which isn't the most ideal solution since it also removes all your programs and personal data.

You will need to create a Windows 7 DVD to repair the Windows 7 OS. You can find Windows 7 SP1 ISO files here, Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO Image Downloads.

Make sure you download the ISO file that corresponds with the version of Windows 7 that is shown with your product key.

Once you have downloaded the ISO file you want, download and run the portable version of Active ISO Burner and burn the Windows 7 ISO file to a DVD.

Then boot the computer from your Windows 7 DVD and see if that works. If it does then let me know and we can go from there.

Ok, creating the boot disk from the iso and running 'Statup repair' seems to have fixed the problem. I can boot to my desktop now and all the programs I had running in my tray are back. Strange though because after 'startup repair' ran it said it didn't find any problems yet it fixed my issues anyway.

    Thanks for all the help!

So would you consider this thread resolved or do you have any other questions?
