    Hello all,
I have an interesting problem. I recently ran MS's defrag on a Compaq PC, (PII, 450, 256 Meg RAM, 10 gig HD, W98SE). Since then, whenever the pc is booted an error message appears:
    While initalizing device NTKERN
    Windows protection error
and the machine stops booting. After performing a 3-finger salute it will boot into safemode, then upon restarting from safemode it will boot up normally. The next time that the pc is booted the cycle starts again. I tried to not let it boot into safemode but the NTKERN error still happened. Can anyone at least point me in a direction to start troubleshooting this?
    Thanks.

Most curious. I tried limiting the amount of memory to 16meg through msconfig and the problem did not occur. I reinstated the full memory (384 meg, not 256) and rebooted, the problem did not occur. Prior to this, it happened on every boot except after rebooting from safe mode.
