My son is building a fast desktop computer and is thinking of placing it on his desk rather than under it, thinking it would be better for airflow. What are your thoughts on this?

I have always put mine under the desk. Have it siting on one of those short plastic drink crates. I have done this for years. Got plenty of room on both sides and the back of it also.

That way, I get to pile more junk on the desk. :D

Hi Barry. I keep my computer on the floor beneath my desk since there is more room. If you are concerned with dust though then keeping it on the desk may be better especially if there are pets around.

After the computer has been built you can always run Open Hardware Monitor with the computer on the desk and again with the computer on the floor and see if the location changes the temperature of the components. I seriously doubt its going to make any difference but you can look at the temperatures and make that decision for yourself.

Heat rises. It's cooler on the floor. #1 enemy of computers = heat.

Thank you for your feedback. I've passed this information on to my son.

Make sure that there is plenty of room in the back as this is where the fans blow the hot air out of the PC.

Actually, there is more hot air coming out of the top than the back. There is a 360mm Thermaltake Water 3.0 Ultimate radiator on top, with 3 exhaust fans, but only one 120mm AeroCool DS120 exhaust fan at the top of the back. Intakes are 2 AeroCool DS120s in the front and the 2 Thermaltakes that came with the case underneath. Here is the case: http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00002473

I wish I knew how to get my hands on one of those short plastic drink crates.

I get mine when it gets dark thirty. Just kidding. Asked the Pepsi man if he had any broken ones and he said yes. Gave me one and I looked at it and said "this ain't broke ". He hit it on the pavement and said yeah it is. Look right there. Was a little rough surface on it. Thanked him and left.

Mine sits on the floor, but it does get dusty down there.
