Once again, I am trying to help a friend who has windows 98SE who's computer keeps booting into safe mode at startup. She downloaded a recommended patch from Microsoft, after it finished, she re-booted the computer as directed and ever since then the computer keeps starting in safe mode. Does not recall what the patch was for. I obtained info from the Microsoft Base (Article# 306615) "The computer always starts in Safe Mode ". I followed the directions, went into Msdos.sys (eventually into Wordpad) and only find (1) BootGui, (2) BootMulti and (3) DoubleBuffer. I did not find "BootSafe" as the article stated.

I then proceeded back to the Microsoft Base and obtained more info (from Article# 143283) "Windows 95/98 defaults to Safe Mode after successful start. Looked for "wnbootng.sts file per the instructions with no luck there either. Can't even find that particular file.

I played around in the startup section (thru Msconfig), unchecked and checked certain items, re-booted nothing changed. I checked Device Manager, finding no problems there. Performed disk cleanup and scandisk with no problems (did not do defrag) and all went well there.

I made other inquiries, and thru techadvice.com under Starting Windows 98, it lists basicall the same steps as in the Microsoft Base (Article 306615) The computer always starts in safe mode, but refers to making the changes in BootMenu under Notepad instead of Wordpad as directed by Microsoft. I have not tried this yet and before I do, was wondering if anyone had similiar experiences and / or suggestions that will help.

Right click on "My Computer" go to Properties then to Device Manager.

Click on the + signs All of them and highlight and remove all duplicate entries (some Windows may not allow you too -thats OK)

Now Get out and try and restart it.

If that doesn't work then use the Win 98 Bootdisk to get to the A:\> prompt

At the A: prompt type the following hitting the <enter> key after each line:

    c:
    cd\windows\command
    scanreg /restore (notice the space)

You should get a choice of registries to restore. Select one that was before the problem.
    c:

Blatantly ripped from here. (Cause I'm a lazy typist :D )

That's all I've got Master Green. But maybe bumping this back up to the top will catch someone's eye.

    Hello

I've had this problem in the past, if you have windows 98se disk boot from the disk and reinstall windows, no format just reinstall. This should take care of your problem nice and easy.

Thank you Michael, I will sure to add that to my list as another option. I should know in a few days what worked and what didn't...
