I have just configured a new computer with Win 8.1 and want to bypass the login screen. I'm the only user at home and have done this on Win 7 dozens of times.

Normally I would open User Accounts using the control userpasswords2 command and uncheck the password box for the administrator.

On the Win 8 machine in the user accounts window, the User Name is my email address however, when I uncheck the box and click OK, the Automatic sign in window shows only my first name as the username and not the email address. It shows my name and not my full name nor the email address that the login screen displays on startup.

The question is, do I need to change the User Name on the 2nd sign in window to my email address to do this correctly.

I remember that I made a mistake once on Win 7 and couldn't log into the machine.

    Thanks for any advice

No, I want to bypass the login screen on start up. I can configure whether it goes to the start screen or the desktop but I want to bypass the need to login with the password on startup

Those are the steps I was working with.

I just needed to know if the username was the email address in the login account vs. my first name as it was presented in the User Accounts window.

I tried to leave it blank as was shown in the insructions you sent and it didn't work so, I inserted the email address and now I am good to go.

    Thanks

That is a very bad idea!!!!

You, the user, and ALWAYS the weakest link in security, need to ensure good "physical security" too. That means taking steps to ensure someone sitting down at your desk when you are not around cannot and easily access your user account, your email, your contacts, your files, etc. This includes badguys who break into your home or office and steal your computer.

So you should absolutely require a password to enter your account - even from sleep.

You don't have to use a Microsoft account and instead use a Local account. A Local account is much easier for the user to enter, IMO and if not using a Local account, I recommend you go that way instead. You don't have to use a 14 character PW, but it should be fairly strong, and not something a nosey neighbor, relative, or "friend" can guess.
