I am trying to backup files for transfer to a new computer. I hit START, and PROGRAMS, and ACCESSORIES, and SYSTEM TOOLS, but BACKUP is missing from that menu. What can I do to restore BACKUP?

    gene,

Welcome to the board! If you just want to transfer files and not programs, copy the files to a floppy and transfer that way. Just reinstall the program itself on the other system, copy your files from the floppy, and you'll be good to go. As long as you have the program disks, this would be the preferred method.

As far as the restore function, somebody else will have to chime in on that.

if you have a new XP computer that you want to transfer the old computer files to it, so that they will be installed and work.

Then connect the computers togather in one of several ways and use the file transfer wizard. Let us know what you are doing and we will guide you here.

Or (my choice) remove HD from the old and attach to new and do the same if XP. If not XP then there are still ways.

Let us know what you are trying to do.

If you are using windows98, do this to restore backup program into your accessories folder.

Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Under Windows Setup, scroll down and look for System tools. Double click on it (not anywhere within the checkbox) and a new dialog would open up. The item backup should be listed as the first item. Check the box (make sure it's fully check and not grey in colour). You might be prompted for windows disk to continue installation.

    Hope this helps

Also, using Windows Explorer, look in "C:\Program Files\Accessories\BACKUP\MSBACKUP.EXE "
You can double click "msbackup.exe" to start backup process
