XP audio headache

My sister has a sony computer she bought about six months ago and found that voice messaging doesnt work.
Also the the system sounds wont play, though all other audio functions work just fine.
I have updated her audio driver, made sure all of the codecs were present, assured that all media drivers installed.
I played the system sounds through media player and the sounds play just fine, but when try to play them in the sounds and audio devices window in control panel, the play button stays dead.
I know its just a simple problem but I give up.

I have win me and have installed a or the plus packagage
I think it confuses us and windows.sometimes
