    This is a question on editing boot.ini in Windows XP.

    At one time I tried to install a thumb drive using what for was a poorly desinged format and boot routine.

    My Startup screen contains the option of loading Microsoft Windows XP or the GRUB bootloader.

    I stumbled across the information releated in msconfig. Start > run > msconfig > open boot.ini tab.

    In there is the following which is are to type out accurately by line:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)disk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    "Microsoft Windows XP Pro Professional "/nonexecute=optin/fast detect/
    c:\GRLDR= "Start Grub "

    ends.

    It looks like an old style auto.exe and I wan to elimination the Grub option.

    Can I delete lines?
    Which ones?
    Will XP boot normally with the prompts afterwards?

    I noted that in my operation XP system, boot.ini contains the first group
    of these phrases.

    This should be an easy 'Resolve" but I am caution about doing any of these changes.

    Hi loninappleton.

    In the boot.ini file remove this line: c:\GRLDR= "Start Grub ".

    Then save the changes to the file and restart the computer.

    Still problems.

    Please be more complete.

    The bullet option to use a modified boot.ini file is greyed out (turned off) , no edit or save option is visible and the only movement of the line to delete is 'move' up or 'move down.' I think I investigated that much myself but found no editing process.

    The dual menu is off-- a problem I had on two drives, one perhaps cloned from another. I cannot recall. But I am still in the midst of solving other things all of which cropped up at the same time.

    Wrestling with things like installing a thumb drive where there is no easy way to format or use the thing as a boot device was, I believe, where the dual boot menu got installed by something like the HP or Linux progs which can format one.
