It is possible that you have a failed memory stick to begin with. Just what did the computer do when it first went down?

    ?????

What kind of computer is it, what processor, memory, storage, how old is it, can you just do a reformat and then install windows or have you already? If you reformated and then isntalled windows and this happened then it sounds like your processor or mother board is going out need more info.

Catgirl, hold down the CTRL key when booting the computer, you will get a dos menu on the screen, use the arrow keys and select Safe Mode.
That webpage gives you instructions on how to restore some files, however the files from the 98 CD may be of the wrong version. They do need to do an update on that page. You need to get the files that comes with your version of IE.
When you get into Safe Mode, go into Windows Explorer, and if you have updated your IE off of the internet, look for a folder named Windows Update Setup Files, and doubleclick the file named ieXsetup, the X being either a 5 or 6. Select the minimum install. Hopefully it will not need to connect to the internet this way.

Let's do this the easier way. Boot up with a 98 startup floppy, choose with CD rom support. Watch the screen for a message telling you what the drive letter for the CD, may be E: . Before you run setup, type this in at the prompt exactly:

    c: <enter>
    cd\windows <enter>
    ren win.com win.old <enter>
    ren winver.exe winver.old <enter>

These steps will let the OEM disk install onto the hard drive.

Then put in the 98SE OEM CD into the drive, then type this in at the prompt.
    e:\win98\setup.exe <enter>

Bad news i try what you said to do with oem cd-rom.now it will only let me into safe mode only, can't choose what drive myself. It will start loading devices, when it got to memory,it said check to see ig you havedevice= C/windows/himem.sys and put in in config.exe file, but can't get there. For some reson it will not go pass the win98 screen after restart.before i was getting to blank desktop. Is there a way to fix this.

Boot up with the floppy, and type in this at the prompt exactly:

    edit c:\config.sys

You will not be able to use a mouse at this point, use the arrow keys to get around. At the top of the config.sys file put this line in exactly:

    device=c:\windows\himem.sys

To save this, hold down the ALT key and press F, then use the arrow key to highlight Save, then press enter. Use the ALT+F again, but now highlight Exit. Take out floppy and boot it up.

You must have those lines exactly as I typed. Note I used this \ slash, not the other one / .
    Good luck.
