I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro on my Dell laptop. The installation went fine including all necessary drivers. After downloading all updates from Microsoft, a strange thing happened. I saved a Google shortcut on my desktop and the shortcut does not work. The Google page opens but nothing happens. If I go to the Internet Explorer orb on my taskbar, it works perfectly. If I open the orb and go to Google, it works. If I save the Google shortcut to my desktop it does not work. I have nothing installed on my laptop except updates and drivers. I have not installed any other personal programs. How can I save a shortcut on my desktop that actually works? Thanks for reading.

I tried your suggestions and nothing worked. Today I spent about four hours experimenting with various ways to save a shortcut. By sheer luck I found one method that worked. I'm not crazy about it but it solved my problem:

Create a Shortcut to a Webpage
    •Right-click the Desktop.
    •Click New and then Shortcut.
    •Click Next.
•Under "Type the location of the item:" type https://www.google.com/ and click Finish

I don't like the newer OS and IE. Too many bells and whistles that most of us do not need. What was wrong with Windows XP Pro with IE8? In any event thanks again.
