    Problems Problems

I'm downloading Opera 7 and got a message "Java (TM) installer. We recommend that you do not install this Java Pltfm. Java Pltform does not support the O/s Service Pack on this machine. Please upgrade to MS SP2." Does this have anything to do with the trial Sun vs. Microsoft and the use of Java?

    Ramon, no Mozilla

This is a new hard drive with W2K installed. I seem to be having problems with the W2K and NS7. No mozilla installed. Just downloaded Opera -- wow! what an interface, beautiful! So now I'm trying to get the Opera email client working and the support page no help.

I may have two profiles. I don't know, I'll look and see.

It seems that I cannot install Java 2, which I clicked to custom install w/NS7; could that be the problem?

    sal_gal,

I believe it has something to do with your win2k version. It sounds like you have win2ksp1 (service pack 1), and the java installer seems to require at least service pack 2. If you wish to use Java from Sun, you may need to upgrade. For now, you can forget about Java until you get your Netscape problems resolved. BTW, Opera 7 is still a beta (it has bugs).

    No Java installed

This time I deleted motver.dat; when I reinstalled NS7,did not check Java 2. It seems to be performing a little better. Time will tell.

Also have Opera running, but can't figure out to the email client setup.

Thanks Ramona -- seems Opera doesn't have email setup

"Warning: Opera 6 does not support SMTP authentication. If your area requires SMTP authentication then you will need to use a different program for sending e-mails. Opera can be setup to use a different program such as Netscape Messenger, Outlook Express and just about any other major mail program. "

    sal_gal,

Unsupported? That is simply not true. The mail client in Opera 7 BETA 2 is new, and should be supported once Opera 7 final is released.

Have you checked here for information on the new Opera mail client? I have used it a few times, and have had no trouble retrieving/sending mail or news.

If you post back with more information perhaps I can be of assistance... but as this isn't really a Netscape question Ramona may wish to move it to another forum (hopefully she happens to mention which one) ;)

As an aside, I wouldn't give up on Netscape just yet. Many people in this forum seem to use it without trouble...

    good luck!

    Opera sure is pretty

I love the interface, if only I can figure out the email client.

For all it's prettiness, Opera is not recognized by some web sites and trying to play media is a problem. Oh well, one day the developers will get this browser thing right.

Anyhow -- I've given up on NS 7 and will use it as a backup to Opera; just as I use IE as a backup to NS 7. Oh well. I think it has something to do with W2K.

What is the trouble with the mail client? Have you set up an account with the correct information

    username
    password
    incoming (pop) server
    outgoing (smtp) server
username/password for smtp server (if needed)
    email address

You haven't stated exactly what your trouble is with the mail client...

    Mail client is working

I think that Opera support needs a little tweaking a lot of what they print is very confusing. They mention "agent" under the Options menu, but there is no options menu. So I went to "Mail" create a new account. Email is working.

Man -- I tell you this is a fast load! It's very fast and like I mentioned before very pretty.

BTW, both Netscape & Opera are working. I have a feeling the Netscape is allergic to W2K -- and -- tiny firewall. When I exit tiny firewall it seems to work just fine, no errors.

I'm using both of them to see which is more reliable; so far Opera wins.
