i am using win98 se and i need to do a full install of internet explorer....some how my desk top pc's ie crashed and after months of working on it i finally just deleted everthing related to it....including registry entries. I tried extracting the original from the cab file onto my hard drive but i ended up with a file IESETUP.CIF and i cant do a darn thing with a *.cif file. So i am thinking maybe someone knows about a cif file or where i can download a full version of ie and then i can but it on my desktop pc....thanx alot in advance i read previous posts and you guys and gals are all great thanx:)

    Hi jammer27

Welcome to the boards! Have you tried installing Windows on top of itself?

    Hi Jammer

    Welcome to the boaard.

Run IE6 setup tell it a full get to the screen where it says advanced. Enter adavnced, chose download only. This will download the full IE6 install.

After downloaded run it, select full install then select minimal or custom. Then explicidly check everything even though it is in bold.

If you did that the reinstall Windows, not just IE. IE is tightly a part of the OS and you most likely have ogther system bugs and issues too. Reinstall the OS.

kudos to everyone who responded thanx.......

i did try a reinstall of windows and that didnt do it.........everything else on the system works fine......

Before i removed ie whenever i did load ie i kept getting the following message:

"Microsoft internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something , the information you were workin on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Microsoft Internet Explorer. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous. To see what data this error report contains, click here.â€

When I did look at the report it listed info about my pc and the version of ie and windows. It also listed a bunch of dll files. It would then shut ie down but would appear to send a report and then try to restart ie. IE would not restart and I would finally just close the window.

I use a cable modem and if i would remove the USB connection and try to open internet explorer it would open but of course it could not connect.

I tried a dial-up connection but that wouldn't work either.

So i thought that maybe something was wrong with just the ie program so i tried loading aol, Kaaza, yahoo messenger, and anything else i could think of that acesses the internet but doesn't require internet explorer. Every time i tried one of those programs i got the following message:

"The program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. "

Full is full of spy/adware! Probably you problem!

Lite is Kazaa without the bad stuff!

Spy/Aware does not leave because you removed IE.

I HIGHLY advise d/l install and run the following:

    Spyware and adware removal
    http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html

How are you communicating with this BBS if on another computer then these programs will each fit on a floppy. Take them to the computer wih the problem and insatall them. In configuration select everything except floppy and CD.

I WOULD NOT EVEN TRY INSTALLING IE UNTILL THIS IS DONE!

After you do this get back!

You are on another compter aren't you?

Well if the problem compter has ie6setup.exe (do a search).

Run that file select full install then check Minimal or custom then check everything down to language support manually select even if bold then click ok. Windows will ask "reinstall all .... answer yes and go.

If no ie6 then look for ie5setup install it so you can access the www the bump up to ie6.

None of the above you need a cd.

ok i am now on my desktop.......so far its working........i had to remove the drivers for the usb cable modem a couple of times but it works.....yahooooooooo..prior to that i tried a dialup connection and it went through and then i got the usb cable modem running.

the first time i loaded ie 6 with the cable modem it ran for about 1 minute and then i got a blue screen and crashed... i rebooted and so far so good.

should i see if there are any critical updates for ie??????

anything else i should now do?

    You mind good Jammer.

    Yes carefully do the updates.

Usually better to do the biggies first like a service pack, it will require a reboot . Then back to update.

You will find different criticals now because some that were listed before were included in the biggie. Now the critiacls apply to the service pack.

Do it to it like Sonny Pruitt! (shut up Newt)
