I was helping my wife in transferring the NetScape mail profile from one PC to another. She uses subfolders for storing mail messages. I followed Ramona's advice and the profile has been successfully transferred, except the subfolders. The folders do not contain subfolders after the profile transfer. What would be the advice for this, please?

Thanking in advance for any tips for this question.

    Den from Tokyo

Welcome to the Forum, T Den Nagata!

    Hello Den,

In the Mail Folder, on the PC from which you transferred the files, or on the storage media you used:
look for folders with an sbd extension. These folders will contain the subfolders and their index files (msf).

Post back if you have questions, or continue to have problems.

    Dear Ramona,

Thank you very much. Follwoing your instruction, I copied the sbd files with Netscape closed. And, bingo!, all the subdirectory my wife wanted were there. Your advice was most appreciated.

What I do not understand is why Netscape does not have a feature whereby these transfers can be done automatically. The upgrade is not very user-friendly.

Also, for people who own more than one computers would be at a loss about this. Do you have a tip about how to deal with two computers, one at home and the other on the road? How can one ensure to have the same mail messages in the two computers, or more?

    Best regards,

    Den
    :)

The subfolders are certianly transportable by copying the files in "Profile" when using an IMAP account. I have two PCs downstairs (and two upstairs when the children ar home from boarding school) They are all networked, and for the past few days one PC had been running Linux (Redhat 8) - that effectively makes 5 terminals - all can read the same IMAP mail files using Netscape/Mozilla.

Mozilla is better because it can be set to flag sub-folders when they receive new mail - Netscape 7 cannot (strange)

If you want to access mail from different locations or PCs - from an email client or a web-page the use IMAP

www.fastmail.fm is very good, and filtres the mail for viruses and spam. There is a free account and various enhanced pay accounts starting at 15 dollars one off.

www.totalise.co.uk is also very good, but I believe you need a UK postal address. It too is free.

Both allow you to send from their (SMTP) server, fastmail offer this to paying customers.

    Den,

Yes, I agree with you that it isn't as easy to transfer a Profile from one PC to another, as it was with Communicator. When I transferred a 4.79 Profile to another PC, all I had to do was copy the entire folder and plug it into the newly installed 4.79. Not so with Netscape 7. However, as this browser is still a work in progress, we may yet see changes in that area.

Unfortunately, Netscape 7 doesn't have the Roaming Access feature that was available in Communicator. Roaming Access is listed in Bugzilla, and at least the feature is being discussed for Netscape 7. This is just one of the bugs listed, but there are several:
    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=147344

Using an IMAP account seems to be your only option for the time being.
