I have a 7-8 year old Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with XP. I was having problems booting, not recognizing USB ports, mouse not working, etc. I saw a couple of suggestions to reseat the hard drive and to remove the battery. Tried them both and it has been working perfectly the past two days. I only plan to use the laptop sparingly (have a new Dell 8.1) and don't need portability. Is there any problem to using a laptop with the battery removed. Don't plan to get a new battery.

Hi Robert, There are no problems that I'm aware of when using the charger instead of the battery. Having said that, I would not leave the charger switched on permanently and connected to the laptop as heat buildup will be a problem and the possibility of power surges. Neil.

Good point. I don't leave a computer on for extended periods in any event. Plus I have a cooling pad under the unit so heat should be no problem. I would turn the unit off when not in use and disconnect the cable from power.

    Thanks for the input.
