Hey all, I am upgrading my computer from a 32bit Win7 to a 64bit OS
The reason for this upgrade is because of the way I use this tower it sometimes lags with 4 GB of ram. I can upgrade to 16GB ram with a 64bit OS.
Question 1) Are there any "cons" to this upgrade? or is it all "pros "
Question 2) Would it be better to do a Files and settings transfer wizard to migrate all of my files between the old system and the new system/ After all it is supposed to be a clean install of Win7 64bit to make the change. Or is a back-up more what I need?

What are you doing that it lags so much? I have 7 and 8.1 on 2 separate HD on the same PC with 4 gigs of RAM. Don't have any problems with either of them.

Well... depends. If you have (very old) 16-bit software it will not run on 64-bit (while it does on 32-bit).

The other "cons" would be that it would require a new installation. There's no simple "upgrade" command/path to x64

Well, you are looking at just copying your user data, so choose your favorite method. Me I'd just use Windows Explorer & copy my user data to a backup drive.

I do have up-to-date backups of my entire system & data too of course.

Files and settings transfer wizard worked fine for my files and settings.
after a clean install of win7 64bit I imported file with the easy transfer and it was really smooth.

As a performance side, the computer is a server for a networked software for writing collision damage estimates. When using the workstation the performance REALLY lags.
The installation of the additional memory did help a bunch!

Thanks to all for your input!
