    I am just installed Win98 2nd Edition on a Pentium III and I am having some problems. It is as if sound on the computer doesn't exist. Before I reinstalled Windows I had my speakers plugged into the speaker jack of the mother board (no seperate sound card). Now the sound does not work. I have tried everything. There is NO sound item in the device manager. When I try to open volume control nothing happens. It is as if Windows is not equipped to play sounds. What the heck is wrong? Thanks in advance!

    Did you re-install any Mother Board Drivers that may be needed ?

    If there are MB drivers they need to be re-installed every time Windows is.

    Do you have a name brand computer and if so what is the name and model?

    Here is a copy/paste from my IBM Aptiva/Crystal audio notes that may help a bit. How to access your bios setup utility to enable a disabled sound chip will depend on your particular system.

    ======copy/paste============
    Check your Device Manager to see if there is a listing for a group named "Other ". In some cases if Windows Plug and Play finds devices and does not have drivers available for them
    it will list them under "Other ". If you don't find any 'Other' devices listed before proceeding any further make sure that your Crystal audio chipset isn't 'unplugged' in your BIOS Setup:

    - Shutdown and restart the system
    - When you see the IBM logo screen press F1 to enter the Setup utility
    - Use your down arrow key to highlight/select Devices and I/O ports and press [ENTER]
    - Once the Devices and I/O ports screen is seen press the Page Down key
    - The listing for Onboard audio chip should now be seen. If it says DISABLED use the
    right/left arrow keys to set it to ENABLED.
    - Press ESC twice. If you have made any changes choose "Exit and Save Changes "

    If you have found the Crystal chipset ('Onboard audio chip') to have been disabled when you restart and return to Windows Add New Hardware will appear to assist you in configuring the Crystal devices. If you are asked for a 'disk' just point Add Hardware to
    C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.

    The machine is a Dell Dimension XPS T500. I have just found out the game port does not work (on the motherboard). The mouse and keyboard ports work fine however. Thanks.

    I searched http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums (you may want to search the Dell forums yourself!) and found a link to

    http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dkub/syssetup.htm
    System Setup Program: Dell Dimension XPS Txxx and Txxxr Systems Reference
    ================copy/paste========================
    Enter the system setup program as follows:

    # Turn on (or restart) your system.
    # When the blue Dell logo appears, press <Del>.
    If you wait too long and the operating system begins to load into memory, let the system complete the load operation, then shut down the system and try again.
    =================================================
    So, if you want to check to make sure your audio controller is ENABLED, look Under Advanced Screen Menu Options, select Peripheral Configuration
    and look under Audio.

    I also found:
    http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dkub/drivers.htm
    Drivers: Dell Dimension XPS Txxx and Txxxr Systems Reference

    which contains instructions for reinstalling your Yamaha sound driver in Windows 98.

    Yes, the Yamaha sound driver was the problem. It is also the game port driver. It is odd because I have reformatted this drive about five times and I believe this is the first time I have had this problem. Well, now I know. Thanks for the help guys!
