Happy New Year everyone. Whenever I go to a drive other than C:, I get a pop up that says: Explore caused an invalid page fault in module SHELL32.dll@016F:66801AF2. Anybody have an Idea what this refers to? Thankyou...................

Thank you brett. I am running win 98SE. This thread did not seem to help. I have IE 6, but would like to go back to 5.5 SP2. Could you or anyone steer me in the right direction. Appreciate all the great help. My system seems to be fairly corrupted, so maybe reinstalling windows over itself might help. But most likly a fresh reinstall would be best. Any insight would be great.

Before going to such extremes, why not try the repair utilities available to you? Go to Start>Run, type msinfo32 and click on Tools. Try running the Internet Explorer Repair Utility, System File Checker and Dr. Watson.

You are confusing Windows Explorer with Iexplore. Two different animals.

Normally you would not access the disk with Internet explorer (Iexplore) although you can. Now that is one of the the main jobs "disk access" of Windows Explorer (Explorer).

Sounds to me as though you have a disk error on the other drives.

Confirm you have no problem at all on c:?????

Start by cleaning up both windows and internet temps, then do a full scandisk with surface scan on the problem drives.

If it finds and fixes anything then your problem should be corrected.

Forget ie5 if you think it caused this. Besides 6.0 is the best IE yet.

The other problem that I have is that a window will pop up and say IE has encountered a problem and will close. Happens a lot. I have run antivirus(AVG) and all the above suggestions. Also have trojan remover, JV16 power tools and SpyBot S&D. Let me try to clarify my problem a little better. If I am in windows explorer or if I go to D drive, a box pops up that has a header worded Explorer with a windows flag to the left of it. The text in the box says: This program has performed an illegal operation a will be shut down. I close it out and another box opens with a Microsoft Internet Explorer header. It says an error has occured in IE and IE will close. I close it out and I am back to desktop. Hope this helps. Thank you for all your input.

Ok MT

You have run scandisk on these drives?
Your Spybot is up to date?

Startups are clean?

Then to fix the IE!

Reinstall IE completely but first do the following!

Close IE.

Go to control panel-internet options-delete files select all offline content and delete.

Then

1. boot to f8 boot menu chose command prompt only
then type
a. del c:\*.swp (may get file not found message) is ok!
b. del c:\windows\*.swp
c. deltree c:\windows\temp\*.*
d. attrib c:\windows\shelli*.* -s -h -r
e. del c:\windows\shelli*.*

boot back to full

use search find ie6setup chose full then select minimal or custom in the dropdown box

then check everything down to language even if it is bold (already installed) windows will then ask if you want to reinstall all.. answer yes

Get back to us!

mtwilco-- have a look at this e-mail I sent to my friend, Pierre, if you're determined to keep IE5.5. Personally, I like 6 better.

"Hi Pierre,

Came upon some interesting information while surfing the forums. Everyone seems to have big problems removing various versions of IE when they give trouble.. Here's what one guy did--and the simple suggestion proposed by another!

win98se with no IE, for a lil while. hehehe
well, they said it couldn't be done. if you reinstall windows you cannot uninstall internet explorer. looked like everyone was right.

i'd already upgraded IE to 5.01, and reinstalled win98se, so i was not able to uninstall it. the uninstall info packet had been lost. and then i checked the registry. only to find many entries for IE 4. removing any of these entries causes win98se to go kablooey. BSoD becomes your number one screen item. <chuckle> and you must re-install windows.

i was determined it would not be so. i've got a good setup here, and desire to keep it. not much goes on my "C:\" drive. and i like it like that.

well, i uninstalled netmeeting, outlook express, and internet explorer 5.01. then i edited the registry using regedit. and deleted every key i could find with any reference to netmeeting, outlook express, and especially internet explorer. their were still entries from IE 4.0. no matter, i took them all out.

i had already downloaded the latest version of IE to install at a later date. now was the time. i ran smartdrv /c to clear the cache, and installed IE 6.00.2800.1106
it went in like a charm. my registry has the program files entry pointing to "D:\Program Files ". IE installed itself and outlook express to the D: drive. now was the time for truth. i ran smartdrv /c again just prior to rebooting and crossed my fingers as i hit the windows key> U > R and waited for her to reboot. what a mess! the speakers came out with loud horrendous beeping. she crashed the explorer.exe, the system tray, and just sat there frozen. i hit the power button and rebooted. on the third reboot, she was fine. i've checked the device manager, the internal settings and the logs. she's running like a charm.

i checked in "C:\windows\program files" for the internet explorer folder and the outlook express folder. outlook express was not there. and the internet explorer folder on the c: drive only has one entry, the uninstall info file. <chuckle>

I AM INVINCIBLE! <big ole grin> i've done what everyone else says is not possible. micro$oft insists you will need to re-install windows. every tech site i've been to says the same thing.

it can be done. yes, it can be done.

want to hear the killer? i came to this website, and registered so i could post and get some help with this issue. but the board is setup for a response from email. and i had no email program installed. i came here between uninstalling outlook express and deleting IE. <chuckle> so i thought i'd come back, and let you all know that you can totally delete IE from windows98se and recover the platform. yes, it can be done. <big ole grin>

well, till another day,

Have A Lot Of Fun!

<smile>

Well, I went to the "this" link

http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html

and found an interesting free application which might just help you solve your Internet Explorer problem.

WARNING: IF YOU REMOVE YOUR OLD IE, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GO TO THE NET TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW ONE. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE SOME OTHER BROWSER LIKE NETSCAPE OR OPERA INSTALLED SO THAT YOU CAN GO TO MICROSOFT FOR THE NEW ONE. ONCE IT'S INSTALLED YOU CAN REMOVE THE OTHERS EASILY IF YOU WANT TO.

As you can see, I've converted to HTML for my e-mail. Getting on the bandwagon. "

Thanks broni. Found this registry key and have a question. To resolve this issue delete all the values in the following registry keys:

HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\StreamMRU-and-HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams

Do I delete everything in the right hand pane? One of these has a very long list. Have done a little editing in reg before. However, I just want to be sure. Have backed up regisrty.

This is what, I believe, Microsoft says. Since you have registry backed up, you should be OK.

OK broni. That seemed to fix my problem. But I have a similar one now. I have Touch Manager for the keyboard to control my volume and other things. here is what it states:

Process Description: Touch Manager
Process Name: C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETROPA\TOUCH MANAGER\TOUCHMGR.EXE
Module Description: System Generated
Module Name: System Generated
Dialog Caption: System Generated
Dialog Text: The instruction at 0x0000000F tried to access memory at 0xFFFFFFFF, the read failed
This seems similar to my other problem. By the way how were you able to find the articles that steered me towards resolving my problem? Thanks for your help.

Hey, I'm really glad it solved your problem. How did I found it? Just some well directed searching, I would say.
As for your next error, when does it happen, and what does popup error say?
