I just reinstalled ME on my wife's computer after a sys file was corrupted and I couldn't restore it. Since ME is on an OEM disk I had to wipe out the hard drive and reformat so as far as I know I got a clean install.

Now when I attempt to access the internet using IE 5.5 I get on fine, but when I try to do a search, (using Yahoo as my home page), I get the following message and the program closes.

"lexplore has caused an error in cm8330.drv, the program will now close "

I have tried many times and it does the same thing every time.

I appreciate anyone's help and suggestions. Thanks in advance,

    Ron

    cml8330 fix didn't work

Hi Daisy, I tried the vaious things you listed, but no luck. I can disable the driver and get onto the internet, but when it is enable it messes up a whole lot of explorer things. Like help and internet. I went to cmedia's website and downloaded the driver listed for cml8330 and did the search for new driver, specified location, and it found and installed it, but I still get the same problem.

Among the files in the download program is an uninstaldrv application. It seems to indicate that this will remove drivers...do I dare try this? call me chicken after so many years I still fear the delete and uninstall buttons.

Do you have any of those lovely yellow exclamation marks in device manager?

Oops........ yes. I do believe it would be best to get rid of the old driver first. According to this anyhow?

    Its that awful CmI8330 again

Hello Daisy... once more into the breech! I checked out the uninstaldrv and it did just what it said it would do...next windows searched for and found the downloaded drivers and installed them, but with the same result. Then I noticed that my device page has some bugs that I don't know about. "Other Devices" has a yellow question mark on it and under it is PCI "Communications device" and it has a yellow question mark on it and on that is a yellow circle with an exclamation point in it. I have no idea what this means or if it might be related to my problem.

Under "sound, video, and game controllers, there are a number of devices listed that weren't there before including "SB16 audio device ". the one that has been there all along is "Windows sound System, WSS ". I hAd a red "X" on the sb16 audio device and when I checked it out it was disabled. I reenabled it and then got a message that someother device had snatched its IRQ. When I tried to disable some devices to free up an IRQ it said there still wasn't room and finally after trying all of them the last one was my ethernet connection for my cable. obviously for reasons of ignorance I didn't mess with that.

I read what you said in your email to me and it seems that the IRQ issue with the ethernet adapter could possibly be the problem, however I don't have the slightest idea how one could correct that.

If I leave the sound card disabled then every thing else works, but if I enable the sound card it plays havoc with explorer.

If I replace the sound card how can I know that what I get won't conflict with my system like this one?

    Thanks again for your help.

We're knee deep into hardware issues now..........so I'm going to give a shout out to another member of ours, that got me out of a similar IRQ muddle just a short while ago.

    Mike? That would be YOU!

    Hi SR

    Hi Daizy

    The modem is causing this!

The "PCI comunications device is the modem ". Are you on broadband? DSL or Cable? Unless you are on another computer for this message then you must be on broadband because the modem is not installed.

These things (PCI Winmodem) can be stuborn sometimes!

Since you did not mention it I assume you have sound.

Go back to site to find the modem driver for the CMI. It may be included in the sound card driver but check the site to make sure there is not a seperate driver. Download and save to hd but do not try to install.

    Do this

    1. Conrtol panel-system-decvice Manager remove any unknown devices or any device that is in error (has exclamation point).

    2. Immediately shut down.

    3. Open case, remove modem. This is nessesary. Just take out 1 sscrew an unplug. Leave case off. We will put modem back in later.

    4. Boot computer hit F8 repeatedly to get the menu to get to safe mode. Try to not let computer boot to full mode. On some computers to get to safe mode you can hold the Ctrl key down while booting.

    5. In safe mode hit X in right top to get to safe mode desktop. Go to device manager again. Go down the list open each entry if any have EXACT duplicate entries EXACT not similar then delete both entries. Go to all entries down to but not sound. Stop there unless you had no sound. Nos ound do the same in the sound entry.

    6. Reboot to full mode without the modem. Recheck for the problem if you have cable or dsl. NOTE: if you have broadband (cable or DSL) and you do not have a use for the modem you can leave it out if you want.

    7. Since I do not know if a modem is required to access the internet the below is all I can advise now.

    8. Back to device manager recheck all enties for errors. Also check for unknown devices. Remove errors (should be none) and unknown devices.

    9. Hopefully there were none so shut down. Reinstall the moden. Leave case off until this problem is fixed. Reboot! Should say new hardware found. Then it will say PCI Communications device. For drivers you will have to browse to the device drive folder of the CMI driver.

    10. Still problems after this! Get me the info I mentioned above and fill me in on the results and we will continue.

    Mike

    CMI8330 Sound Chip
    Question:
    8. How come full-duplex functions don't work?
    Answer:
Because CMI8330 uses two devices(SB16 & WSS) to perform full-
    duplex functions, some applications may
detect that CMI8330 is not full-duplex. To avail yourself
of full-duplex functions, please select different wave
devices between the playback and the recording in audio setup
of that program. Or you can set the playback
and the recording devices to different ones in "Multimedia"
of "Control Panel ". In Iphone 5.0, please set the
full-duplex function forcibly, then the full-duplex functions
    will be working fine.

These error messages can occur if your computer uses a sound card based on
the C-Media CMI8330 sound chip, or a modem that also uses the C-Media
CMI8330 sound chip. This sound chip is used as the basis for several sound
cards, and is also used with some modems.

    RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your sound card or modem
    to obtain an updated driver.

If you are unable to contact the manufacturer of the your sound card, you
can try the C-Media Windows 98 sound card driver version 4.10.00.0152 or
later available on the following C-Media Web site:

    http://www.cmedia.com.tw
Follow the links on this site to the drivers.

Jim, Great work! At your suggestion I went to the Device manager to find
a SCSI device (of which I have None!) with a conflict. I immedately removed it.
There was also a yellow explanation point on a SB16 sound driver which I removed
also. when I restarted the computer Windows "Found New Hardware" and supplied a
driver. I am keeping the URL with the updated driver you suggested. The entire fix
    took about 2 minutes.

    -----Original Message-----
Rob, this appears to be a problem either with your sound card or your
    modem.
The file referenced supports a sound card or a modem based on the
C-Media CMI8330 sound chip. (This chip is used in a number of sound cards and
modems, which wouldn't necessarily have the C-Media name associated with
them.) There's a discussion of it in the following MS Knowledge Base
    article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q188/8/03.ASP

The solution is to contact the manufacturer for an updated driver.
Failing that, the above article gives a link to a particular C-Media driver that
might work. You might find some further clues in identifying this
    hardware by examining the article.

Hi Alice (hope you had merry Christmas and have a happy entire 2003!

In this case it is the modem as evidenced by PCI communications device in unknown devices.

My advice still stands to correct this problem.

Alice pointed to 2 drivers required for sound. I assume you have sound.

The modem shares a multimedia wave device on the sound card. This cannot work until modem is reinstalled properly or removed.

If removed and not needed (cable or dsl) it can br left out. But has to be removed physically then reinstalled to work. Even then these winmodems are stuborn.

    Hi Mike!

My thinking was that maybe following the advice on one of the NG posts to remove all conflicting (or even ALL) devices under Sound Video and Game Controllers and "Other Devices" (PCI "Communications device ") without physically removing the modem might be a first step especially for people who are hardware challanged (like me!)

That way Windows might be able to redetect the hardware, "reshuffle" the IRQ's,and reassign resources.

    Just a thought!

Happy 2003 to you as well!

    My experience with this. Much!

Is a winmodem, it most of the time is a waste of time to leave it in on this type of error. By physically removing it, bringing the computer up without it, get everything else cleared away will make it easier to reinstall.

Could be another problem uncoverd by this proceedure anyway. Any other problems should be cleared before this modem is physically reinstalled.

    Tell them BillyBob!! Smile!

But in any case that is their decision. I only advise and reccomend!

    Hi Mike,

Anything hardware-oriented scares me! I would rather look for other solutions, even temporarily disabling the hardware device in the bios, before unplugging hardware!

I had another thought, if there is a "MPU-401 Compatible" MIDI device taking up an IRQ and no midi output device like a midi keybord is needed, then that can be disabled??? Or changed to a configuration that does not require an IRQ? I had this in my notes on IRQ conflicts:
The first time I installed this card, the MPU-401 automatically switched over to a configuration that did not require an IRQ. This time I had to do that
manually by going into the properties for the MPU-401 (which is just a
MIDI port for keyboards anyway), uncheck the Use Automatic Settings
box, and choose Basic Configuration 0002. This freed up IRQ 11

Hope I didn't muddy the issue.

    Hi Alice

    I understand that!

It is easy for me to say because HW is simlper and more stright forward to me than the OS. And I do know a little about OS's also! Smile!

So if they feel the same way then maybe your way is best for them.

No harm done normally except the time spent. There is a some chance it will work.

But physically removing the modem has a much higher chance.

    CHI8330 PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

:D Wow! I want to thanks all of you folks for your suggestions. I didn't have to use all but Thanks Daisy for getting me on track. I recognized something was wrong in the IRQ's even though I don't knowmuch about them. Thanks for getting Mike in on it too! Mike! You be the Man! Hardware Man that is! It was the stupid antique, (I use cable), Modem. The only reason it was in there was somebody told me "Just leave it, it won't cause any trouble!" Famous last words....Thanks alice for jumping in there and anyone else I missed on the thread.

I followed Mike's suggestion to shut down and remove the modem...the funny thing is that the computer didn't even recognize that it was there until I did a visual and saw it. Next I restarted in safe mode. I had a PCI Communications device with an exclamation point in a yelllow circle under other devices which had a question mark on it. I removed the device and quickly shur down. After lettingit sit about a minute I fired it back up and there was that beautiful windows music...at least this time.

The next thing was to check my search engine out and it worked too with no conflict.. Explorer did not conflict either.

I could try a reinstall, but like Mike says...Why? So the modem is going into a box to be stored for some future eventuallity like all my other boards.

I want to shout Praise the Lord! for all you adventurers out there! Who knows, maybe I'm not to old to learn this stuff.

Thanks a bunch...catch ya later on another thread!

    Ron
