Thanks, Bill. In Italy, they (like most other acquisitions) are legally guaranteed for 2 years, no matter what the manufaturer offers.

Hi g.watson - OK - Wouldn't worry about the partitions. They are not "ghost" just hidden because they are not for normal use. The setup looks normal to me.

Take a look at how the partitions are identified using 8.1 disk management utility.

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/disk-management-windows-8.htm

Here are a couple of articles about the hidden partitions which may be of interest, although some of the posters are using diskpart, an old program. Just read for information, not as a tutorial.

    http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/169284-windows-81-creates-2nd-recovery-partition/

I still suspect the partiton Speccy labels as #5, with the 12.6GB of data, may be an Acer recovery partition. It may be labelled as such by disk management, or you can follow the frst steps in the acer tutorial - search for recovery and then see if there is an Acer choice.

Wouldn't hurt to do a memory check. Doesn't take a long time.

    http://www.7tutorials.com/identify-memory-problems-windows-memory-diagnostic

In the tutorial, scroll down to the 8/8.1 section.

My take is that corruption is not unusual, may be caused by the interaction of apps and can be transient. Windows 8.1 has significantly improved self-healing, and is handling the situation without difficulty. You may find an update comes along in a few months to fix the problem. One of the hazards of being a pioneer with the newest OS.

Just my opinion. It's your decision.

Again, many thanks, antik. There's a lot of stuff there I shall go through. You've been a tremendous help and support with this and I feel more confident now. I'm marking the thread "resolved" faute de mieux. If anything ese happens which might be useful for other readers, I'll open a new thread.

    UPDATE:
Yes: Disk Management utility specifcally describes the three hidden partitions as recovery partitions, just to get that particular mystery out of the way.
