    Is this product any good?

I don't mean as real-time protection; just as a manual scanner and malware remover.

SAS is not a wide spectrum product for cleaning a heavily infected machine. Seems to focus on trojans, the occasional worm and adware. Finds the ones that are bundled with software installers these days. Offers some protections for users who insist on using Internet Explorer. Will notify if anything in Security Center is turned off. What it finds, it can remove. The trend is toward do everything suites, but I prefer stand alone tools that can be run manually after mse and mbam scans are done. The SAS quick scan is quick, especially if you configure it to ignore files over 4MB, non-executables and things you whitelist. That makes it not too irritating to run at start-up and shutdown to catch things before they "nest ". There is also a separate tool to deal with "undeletable" files and a registry repair tool to restore things like task manager, sfc, the run command, control panel, etc. disabled by malware.

SAS is one of the 68 programs that are part of the cloud malware scanner called herdProtect. You can look at the last 500 detections to see what it is finding:

I've never heard of herdProtect, but it sounds intriguing.

How long has it been around?

EDIT: Looks like the program is still in beta state.

Lots of press, but still in development. Risk of false positives with that many engines. I have not tried it. Just thought it was interesting to see what SAS is looking at.

I was thinking along those lines myself.

I have it installed on virtual XP, but I have not removed anything with it yet after the first scan. The program recommends waiting at least an hour of so before running a recommended second scan.

herdProtect is a product of Reason Software Company Inc., headed by Andrew Newman, architect of Windows Defender and SpyNet, acquired by Microsoft.
