I had just fairly recently switched security on my XP machine to microsoft security essentials, because AVG was becoming huge, annoying, and full of junk.

I want to get something else on there before april 8 but i dont know what.

(for the record, have already switched to chrome. still need to backup all important files though).

Will i be at any more risk than before? Honestly i would wait months in between actually installing windows updates. Ive just always been very cautious with which websites and emails i trusted. even if it was from someone i know but the content was suspicuous i would ask them about it.

Hi Mel. As an alternative to Microsoft Security Essentials you can install Avast Antivirus which is free. I would also recommend installing Spyware Blaster and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to help protect your machine.

Just note that once support for Windows XP ends that your computer could still get compromised by malware no matter what security software you have installed and no matter how careful you are. So yes your machine will be more at risk. See this link for more information about the subject, Windows XP End of Support is on April 8th, 2014: Why Windows is Warning You.

I have 2 computers with XP on them and I found that ZoneAlarm works quite well. I started with the free firewall first but after seeing how good it was I opted for the ZoneAlarm with Antivirus version: 13.0.208.000 which costs $39.95 a year for up to 3 computers.

Dear Mel I find Avast to be a very good AV. I have used XP Pro for many years and the last update I did was SP3..! A long time ago. It works as well as day one and as long as you have a good firewall you should be fine.

Avast is what I use on XP, but I don't turn the machine on much.

If not AVG internet security 2014, then i think Avast would be the perfect choice.. it is a very light antivirus comparing to AVG but i use AVG internet security 2014 on my xp... and it works just fine, perfectly.

AV TEST, a German outfit, did an evaluation in April to see which anti-malware product did the best job of specifically protecting Windows XP.

(Quote) "AV-TEST used a Windows XP installation that was vulnerable to a number of exploits and checked whether the products were able to detect and block these attacks."

Qihoo Internet Security 360 scored very highly, better than some of the better-known brands like Avast, AVG and Avira. Qihoo 360 incorporates three engines, one in the cloud for the most current signatures, Bitdefender for off line, and a heuristic analysis engine to guard against 0 day exploits. The product also incorporates a sandbox.

Qihoo is a Chinese company that claims 450 million users worldwide. Windows XP still has a huge following in China, and Qihoo commissioned this particular test. Following are links to the AV Test report (.pdf) and three other reviews.

    http://securitywatch.pcmag.com/secu...xp-exploit-protection-tested-winners-revealed

There are also a number of youtube videos which examine the workings of the product in detail, and a Google search will yield reviews of earlier versions. Be aware that Qihoo's performance is not as good on the latest Microsoft OS versions, and there is talk of privacy concerns with using a product by a Chinese company for security.

I have not personally used this product, nor am I endorsing it. I'd be interested to know if anyone here has tried it, or has additional information.

Careful. Before he founded Qihoo, Zhou Hongyi founded a company called 3721 which became one of China's first search engines that he sold to Yahoo in 2003 for $120 million. "But 3721?s software had become popular by lodging itself in computers as spyware. It introducing pop-windows, bedeviling its users — and some would say it introduced spyware into China. "

SpywareDr, be careful is always good advice, but the linked article is dated November 3, 2006.

Competition in China is cutthroat, and it is not uncommon for those who fail at the business to try and win back some of their losses in the courts.

Here is one take on Yahoo in the China market, including an explanation of the parting of ways with Zhou Hongyi.

Safe to say you are not alone in that judgment. I'm not inclined to try Qihoo myself right now, although the company clearly interests me. I note Herdprotect has it as one of their engines. AVG and Avira have also had toolbar fiascos. I have used both, and am not inclined to go that route either. Still with MSE.

Wall Street Journal interview with Qihoo 360's Zhou Hongyi November 30, 2012

(Quote) ",,,in 2006...a number of Chinese companies, including a search engine Mr. Zhou helped to create and eventually sold to Yahoo, would guide users to install toolbars on their browsers that would direct them back to company-generated content. Qihoo 360's software identified the toolbars as malware and uninstalled them.

Mr. Zhou acknowledged that he had helped to make certain toolbars for his search engine, which later his new company, Qihoo, would make a business out of uninstalling. "It's a mistake I made," he wrote in an email referring to helping create the toolbars. He added that he was young at the time and overly focused on competition instead of respecting his customers.

Qihoo's removal of the toolbars prompted Yahoo China, Mr. Zhou's former employer, to sue Qihoo 360 for unfair competition. Yahoo China won the suit and the court ordered Qihoo to stop the activity and compensate Yahoo for damages and legal costs.
