    I need to know how to change the Excel 2010 default back to " Auto" mode for calculating formulas. For a long time this was defaulted to Auto but in the last few months it has defaulted to manual mode and I have to go to the formulas tab and change this to Auto from manual. But this only changes it for the current session and as soon as I exit Excel and then re-start Excel again it is back in manual mode again. I have been told that this problem could have been caused by me using sheets with macros in them?, but as I am an Excel novice I have never programmed macros but have used sheets with macros in them from other people. My operating system is Windows 7 64bit and Office 2010.

    Just an FYI - the F5 key will cause a recalc to happen when pressed.

    I have Office 2010 at the office but I'm not there... In the older versions you'd click on Tools->Options->Calculations tab and select Automation. 2010 will be similar.

    Changing The Excel Defaults

    Hi Steve,

    Yes, but that is ok for the current session but when I re start Excel 2010 again it will still be in manual mode. In this mode formulas only calculate when the file is saved. What I need is for the default to be changed so it will default to auto
    all the time like it did for years until a few months ago.

    If you create a brand new spread sheet do you have this recalc issue? Or does it only happen in spreadsheets that were create way back?

    If it's new spreadsheets look in FILE->OPTIONS for a "calculations" option to change the global default. You then probably have to save it as the default template to replace the existing one.

    In Excel 2010-> File->Options->Formula

    is where you'll find the global option Workbook Calculations

    When set, it would fix any new spreadsheets.

    Hi Steve,

    On further checking it seems that most of my Excel files are .xls or in other words old ones
    from previous versions of Excel.

    Hi Steve,

    I went into file>options>formulas>calculation options and this was set to Automatic.
    I guess this is only for Excel 2010 files or .xlsx. Could a possible fix for the old Excel files be to re-save these as .xlsx files then this possibly would fix the problem with the old .xls files.
